New Bern topples Snow Hill in regular-season finale

NEW BERN -- Snow Hill Post 94 concluded regular-season play with a 6-2 loss at Area I East Division rival New Bern Post 24 on Saturday evening.

Snow Hill (7-13) fashioned a 5-13 record against division opposition and failed to make the playoffs for the first time in 34 seasons. New Bern (12-10) evened its Area I East worksheet at 10-10 and drew the No. 7 seed for the playoffs, which begin Tuesday.

Max Schott homered in the sixth inning with two outs and ended the game with two hits in four at-bats for Post 24. David Fuller provided three hits in four plate appearances, while David Towarnicky batted 2-for-4.

Blake Taylor, Jordan Corbett and Tommy Cobb each had two hits for Snow Hill.

Post 24 hurler Ryan Mills emerged the winning pitcher.

WINTERVILLE -- Byron Powell slapped the go-ahead home run in the sixth inning and Wayne County claimed a come-from-behind, 11-9 victory over South Central on Saturday evening.

Powell's three-run blast erased a 5-3 deficit and gave Wayne County a late-inning lead it wouldn't relinquish. Post 11 added five runs in the seventh and held on for its seventh conference victory in eight tries.

Powell collected four hits and six RBI in five plate appearances. Jeff Hill batted 2-for-3, while Tyler Edwards doubled and drove in a run. Nolan Lancaster drew three walks and scored twice.

Chad Gurley and Garrett Barfield each contributed a base hit.

John Wooten started on the mound for Post 11 and yielded one unearned run on two hits in two innings. Powell threw four innings and picked up the win in relief. Sterling Grice provided one inning of two-strikeout relief and earned the save.

Wayne County (10-3) travels to Snow Hill today.
