Tournaments in Tennessee and West Virginia, along with a string of home matches from mid-September through mid-October highlight the 2006 women's volleyball schedule for defending regular season Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference champion and two-time NCAA Tournament participant Mount Olive College.
The Trojans open their season Sept. 1-2 at the Carson-Newman College Labor Day Tournament in Jefferson City, Tenn. Participating teams include CVAC member Anderson, along with Charleston (W. Va.), Christian Brothers (Tenn.), Kentucky Wesleyan, Lander (S.C.) and Mars Hill. The Trojans also return to the Wheeling Jesuit University Tournament in Wheeling, W. Va., Oct. 6-7. The tournament field has not yet been announced.
The two tournaments represent Mount Olive's only non-conference action of the regular season as the remainder of the Trojans' schedule is comprised of CVAC matches. Mount Olive plays host to Coker Sept. 5 at Kornegay Arena as the Trojans put their 21-match winning streak on the line. The Trojans have not lost at home since their regular season finale in 2003.
After a four-match road trip, Mount Olive begins a six-match homestand Sept. 16, including a match-up against eight-time defending CVAC Tournament champion Lees-McRae. The Trojans won both regular season meetings against Lees-McRae in 2005, but fell to the Bobcats in the championship match of the CVAC Tournament.
The Trojans interrupt their homestand with their trip to Wheeling Jesuit, then play their next three contests at home. The Trojans' home finale is Oct. 15 against Converse. Mount Olive plays its final six matches on the road, ending the regular season at Lees-McRae on Oct. 28.
The CVAC Tournament will have a slightly different format this year as the first-round matches involving the Nos. 6-11 seeds will be played at the sites of the higher seeds Oct. 30, rather than at the site of the conference tournament. Converse plays host to the remainder of the tournament Nov. 3-5. Unlike past years, no team will play two matches in one day at the CVAC Tournament.
The winner of the CVAC Tournament earns an automatic bid to the Atlantic Regional of the 2006 NCAA Division II Volleyball Championship Nov. 9-11 at a site to be determined. Both the CVAC Tournament and Atlantic Regional are being played a week earlier to accommodate the 2006 Fall Sports Festival in Pensacola, Fla., hosted by University of West Florida. The national finals take place November 16-18.
Mount Olive posted a record of 28-8 in 2005 and set a school record for the highest single-season winning percentage (.778). The Trojans won the CVAC regular season championship with 19-1 mark, setting a CVAC record for most conference wins in a season. Mount Olive has earned an at-large bid to the NCAA II Atlantic Regional in each of the last two seasons.
