Post 11 sweeps Ahoskie

AHOSKIE -- Wayne County Post 11 took advantage of a depleted Ahoskie Post 24 pitching staff and rolled to a 19-2 win in the opener of their doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Hertford County High School. The second game was much more competitive, but Wayne scored two late runs to come away with a 3-1 win.

The two wins improve Wayne's Area I East record to 7-8 and its overall mark to 9-9. Wayne will be at home against Snow Hill on Tuesday.

Ahoskie lost to Wilson Saturday night 21-20 in 12 innings, and the Wayne batters took advantage of the situation by racking up 15 hits in five innings. It was Post 11's first win of the season by the 10-run rule.

Jackson Massey, who continues to swing a hot bat and is flirting with the .400 mark, got Wayne going with a leadoff double to start the game. By the time the first inning was over, the visitors had put eight runs on the scoreboard. David Combs, Joye Moye and John Wooten all had RBI singles. Massey also drove in a run with his second hit of the inning.

In the third, Austin Hood followed singles by Wooten and Will Edgerton with a home run to left to make it 11-1. The offense kept the onslaught going with four more in the fourth. Massey drove in a run with his third hit, and Hood doubled into the left-field corner for two more.

Edgerton tripled home two runs in the three-run fifth.

T.J. Hinson went the distance, allowing nine hits and one walk.

The second game was a far cry from the first. In the opening, Wayne scored all but four of its 23 base runners. But in this one, runs were difficult to come by.

Massey again was the sparkplug for Post 11. He singled to start the game, stole second and scored on a two-out infield single by Bennett Jeffreys.

Ahoskie tied it in the fourth on a leadoff double by Heath Britt and a two-out error.

In the Wayne fifth, Massey was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch and advanced to second on a bunt by Chris Massey. Jeffreys hit an 0-2 fastball to deep left to get him home.

Wayne got an insurance run in the seventh. Chris Massey reached on an infield hit and later scored on a single to left by Jeffreys.

Taylor Sutton went five innings for his first win of the season, allowing three hits and a walk. Brandon Price and Ashton Langston each pitched an inning.

Wayne is 79-5 in games called due to the 10-run rule.
