Aycock, Rosewood finish second in Wachovia standings

Charles B. Aycock and Rosewood each finished second overall in Wachovia Conference Cup competition for the 2005-06 academic year.

The Golden Falcons shared Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference regular-season championships in softball and varsity baseball, but got nipped by newcomer Wilson Hunt 180-178 in the overall standings.

Eastern Wayne, which claimed ECC crowns in men's tennis, women's soccer and women's outdoor track finished a close third with 175 points. Southern Wayne, which grabbed a share of the baseball title, amassed 149 points.

Wilson Beddingfield (148 points) and Kinston (109) completed the six-team field.

Rosewood seized titles in men's soccer, men's tennis and women's soccer (split conference) in the six-team Carolina 1-A Conference. The Eagles collected 61 points.

North Johnston claimed the Cup with 70.5 points that included conference titles in softball, men's golf and women's outdoor track.

Ayden-Grifton and Spring Creek tied for third with 40.5 points. Princeton amassed 38 points, while North Duplin picked up 23.5.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective conferences.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play.

Wachovia has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

Independents

Wayne Country Day and Wayne Christian School finished among the top 15 in the Wachovia Conference Cup competition among participating N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association programs. The Chargers recorded top-eight showings in varsity baseball, men's tennis and women's soccer, and ended the year 11th overall with 140 points. Wayne Christian's softball team made its first-ever final four appearance and helped the Eagles record 117.5 points. The men's baseball team advanced to the round of eight, and the men's golf team took second overall.
