New Bern rallies late, upends Snow Hill

SNOW HILL -- Tyler Gohn emerged the winning pitcher in relief as New Bern seized a come-from-behind, 8-5 victory over Snow Hill Post 94 on the Area I East Division scene Thursday evening.

Post 94 claimed a 4-3 lead on Brandon Brown's double in the late innings.However, New Bern answered with a five-run, eighth-inning outburst that included three hits, four walks and a hit batter.

Chip Hall suffered the mound loss in relief of Drew Sowers.

Snow Hill (4-5, 2-5 Area I East) entertains Ahoskie at 7 p.m. today. Reigning Area I East champion Pitt County 39 visits Snow Hill on Saturday, and archrival Wayne County invades the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex on Sunday.

Clayton shuts

out Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Aycock remained winless in three division outings after an 11-0 loss against Clayton on the Charles B. Aycock diamond Thursday evening.

Jordan Carr paced Aycock (2-4) with two hits in three plate appearances. Stephen Strouse, Will Edgerton, Jay Rose and Bryant Hill each produced one hit.

Edgerton endured the mound loss.

Hill, a right-hander, threw a complete-game shutout Tuesday against D.H. Conley. Hill scattered four hits and fanned six Conley batters in an 11-0 victory.

Evan Medford, Conner Narron (double) and Zach Wright (triple) each had two hits for Aycock.

Local players earn

qualifying berths

KINSTON -- Spring Creek graduate Stephen Warren tied for second overall at Kinston Country Club, and qualified for the Big "I" Junior Golf Classic later this summer.

Warren carded a 73 and shared second-place honors with Bobby Baysden of Beaufort. New Bern's Daniel Koontz emerged the medalist with a 71.

Pat Wilkins, Warren's former teammate, shot a 74.

Clark Rose, Matt Davis and Chad Smith each posted an 18-hole score of 76. The trio, along with Wilkins, also earned spots in the Classic, which is scheduled for July 15-16 at Mid Pines Inn and Golf Club in Southern Pines.

The Kinston qualifier is one of eight regional qualifiers contested statewide during June.
