MOUNT OLIVE -- At least this one was close at the end.

Wayne County Post 11 found some offensive life in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday evening, but endured a 6-5 loss against Pitt County Post 160 in Area I East Division play.

Post 11, which played at reigning division champ Pitt County Post 39 on Saturday evening, suffered its second consecutive loss and fell to 3-3 overall. Post 160 defeated Wayne County (2-3 Area I East) for the first time in five meetings.

The Post 11 offense continued its struggles, getting only six hits for the third straight game and is hitting .180 for the season. But Pitt hurler Aubrey Edens bore a large part of the responsibility for that, as the Appalachian State player kept batters off balance in allowing four hits over seven innings.

Wayne trailed by four runs going into the bottom of the ninth before exciting the crowd by getting the first two runners on base. Walker Gourley singled to right, and and beat the throw to second on a grounder to short by Bennett Jeffreys. But the game appeared to be all but over when Thomas Pilkington hit into a double play.

At that moment, Pitt reliever Mike Hallow lost the strike zone, throwing just two strikes in his next 17 pitches. Gourley scored on a passed by while the three walks loaded the bases. He was replaced by Blaine Kinsley.

Chris Massey lined a 3-2 pitch to center, but the fielder dropped it for two runs. Pinch-hitter Joey Moye drove in a run with a hit through the right side of the infield, but Jackson Massey grounded to Kinsley to end the rally.

Edens helped his cause by starting the four-run second with a double, and Chris Camp singled to right. Edens scored on a sacrifice fly. Two infield hits loaded the bases before a run scored on a force out at third. Leadoff batter Tyrell Worthington lined a 2-0 fastball to right for the first home run this season against Post 11.

Wayne got back a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Austin Hood but gave it away on an unearned run in the third.

David Combs went six innings for Wayne allowing nine hits. Hood had his best game at the plate with three hits and a walk.
