SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. -- Jamie D'Antona and Jerry Gil combined to drive in four runs, while Steven Jackson pitched five reliable innings as Tennessee beat Carolina 6-1 at Smokies Park on Tuesday night.

D'Antona hit a two-run homer in the seventh, while Gil was a homer shy of the cycle as the Smokies (25-28) took a 2-1 series lead with Carolina (26-27).

Paul Mildren (3-5) absorbed the loss working six innings, giving up nine hits and three runs. Mike McNutt made his first appearance since being placed on the disabled list in mid-April, and yielded three runs in two innings.

The Mudcats had nine hits in the game, including three singles by Edgar Gonzalez. Alejandro DeAza and Kevin Randel pitched in two apiece.

Both teams struggled early to bring runners in as the game remained low-scoring. Carolina misfired on a leadoff double in the first by DeAza, then could not push across a run with a first-and-third, none out chance against Jackson (2-3) in the fourth.
