Hawks reach eastern championship series in baseball

LaGRANGE -- Sthil Sowers turned in a complete-game effort on the mound and emerged North Lenoir's top hitter in a 3-1 victory over Cedar Ridge in their N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A contest Tuesday evening.

The Hawks (26-1), the state's top-ranked team according to ImpactBaseball.com, begin defense of their eastern regional title at home Thursday against Edenton Holmes. Game 1 in the best-of-three series is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Sowers fanned seven Red Wolve batters and scattered three hits in the seven-inning contest. Offensively, he provided two hits and an RBI in three plate appearances.

North Lenoir extended its postseason win streak to 10 games.

Softball

Croatan ousts

N. Lenoir in 2-A

NEWPORT -- The 2-A state softball title is up for grabs.

Croatan eliminated defending N.C. High School Athletic Association champion North Lenoir 4-3 on Tuesday evening.

Brittany Sanders and Brittany McPhail, both juniors, paced the Hawks with one hit apiece.

Sanders, a left-handed pitcher, endured the mound loss. She struck out 10, walked four and surrendered five hits to the Cougars.

North Lenoir concluded the year 16-10.

Golf

Walnut Creek Ladies

Association play

Linda Cannon seized play-of-the-day honors, while Kathy Woodard claimed low gross. Charlotte Campbell won low net.

Faye Franklin took low putts.

Lane Tree Ladies

Association play

Libby Newsome prevailed in game-of-the-week play, and tied with Donna Adams for low net.

Nan Jarrell grabbed low putt honors.

Goldsboro group

fares well on tour

TARBORO -- Goldsboro's Robert Blair and Dustin Smith each recorded a top-five finish during Flight A play on the Amateur Golf Tour.

Blair ended up third overall with an 18-hole round of 75 on the Cotton Valley Country Club layout, while Smith carded a 76.

Four other Goldsboro golfers competed in the three-flight competition.

Kevin Parker wound up eighth overall with an 83 in Flight B play. Trent Parker and Robert Davidson claimed third and fourth overall, respectively, in Flight C play. Ed Baker finished not far behind the twosome.

The next Amateur Golf Tour event is scheduled for June 3 at Ironwood in Greenville.

Dixie Youth Majors

Wayne Country Day d. Seymour Johnson Yankees 12-0 -- Aaron Debusk and Cody Neal combined for 10 strikeouts on the mound. Cole Davis led WCDS with four hits, including a home run. Neal, Jayme Van Horn, Hil Tanner, Cody Jackson and Alan Lapean also contributed to the win. WCDS (11-0) plays Mar Mac Red at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Dixie Girls Softball

Eastern Wayne d. Boys & Girls Club 10-6 -- Cailin Turner cranked out three hits and drove in four runs. Lindsey Frederick and Ashley Walton each had two hits. Lisa Hollingsworth emerged the winning pitcher with eight strikeouts and three walks. Kaitlyn Floars led the Boys & Girls Club with two hits. Eastern Wayne (3-0) plays North Wayne on Friday.
