NASHVILLE -- Wayne Christian, ranked No. 2 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association, suffered a pair of shutout losses in the state final four over the weekend in Nashville.

The Eagles fell 2-0 to top-ranked Cape Fear Christian in their first game, then lost 8-0 to two-time defending champion, Lawrence Academy in the second game.

In game one, Wayne Christian's Traci Davis struck out 11 against three walks (two intentional) -- yielding only three hits. Cape Fear -- the eventual state champion -- tallied both of its runs on a single to right in the sixth.

The Eagles' Brittany Sullivan posted a two-out triple in the seventh with two outs but was left stranded as Cape Fear held on for a 2-0 win.

Facing Lawrence Academy, Davis went 2-for-3 at the plate and added nine more strikeouts on the mound. Charity Davis had Wayne Christian's only other hit

The Eagles finished the season at 18-4 overall with three of their losses coming to Cape Fear. Wayne Christian loses just one senior, Danielle Pender.

fare well at state

GREENSBORO -- Goldsboro senior Achish Garrett finished fifth overall in the 200 meter -- running a 22.89 at the Class 2-A N.C. High School Athletic Association State Championships on Saturday at N.C. A & T University.

Garrett also teamed with Brandon Davis, Monterio Newsome and Jacob Sykes on the 4x100 (43.59) and 4x200 (1:32.3) relay teams that finished seventh and 10th, respectively. Newsome took ninth overall in the high jump at 5-10.

Goldsboro finished with a total of seven team points.

Omission

Tiffany Burden -- Goldsboro High's female athlete of the year -- was also one of the school's scholar athletes (GPA 93 or higher).
