Virginia Tech signee Jacob Sykes and Tiffany Burden earned male and female athlete of the year accolades, respectively, as Goldsboro High honored its athletes with a season-ending awards banquet at the H.V. Brown Cultural Center on Wednesday evening.

Sykes also drew co-MVP recognition in varsity football, while taking the MVP plaque in men's indoor and outdoor track. Burden garnered the MVP award in volleyball and picked up the Captain's Award in softball.

Jordan McIntyre and Dominique Sauls seized the male and female scholar athlete of the year awards, respectively.

Goldsboro athletics director Randy Jordan acknowledged 14 student scholar athletes, who posted a grade-point average (GPA) of 93 or higher. He also praised 34 athletes who received "honor" recognition for GPAs between 85 and 92.

The Cougars and Greene Central shared the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference sportsmanship award, which is voted on by the league's head coaches in all sports.

"The award shows that our student-athletes and coaches are doing the right thing," said Jordan. "We are very proud of them."

Jordan also announced the final point totals for the EPC Wachovia Cup, which is awarded to the most outstanding overall sports program in the six-team conference. Farmville Central edged Greene Central 62-61.5 for league supremacy. North Pitt nipped North Lenoir 50-49 for third place. Tarboro High was fifth overall with 35.5 points, followed by Goldsboro with 25.
