ECU swept by Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Adam Amar's sixth hit of the game in the bottom of the ninth scored Cory Barton and gave Memphis (30-26, 13-11) a series sweep of East Carolina (32-24, 10-14), 11-10, Saturday afternoon in Conference USA action at Nat Buring Stadium.

Barton started the ninth inning after being hit by a Cody Leggett breaking ball and then advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Bill Moss was hit by a pitch, Amar singled to left-center plating the winning run.

Matt Yokely picked up his second win after working two innings and allowing three runs on four hits. Starter Ben Grisham lasted three innings and gave up six runs on nine hits.

Leggett, who was making his first appearance since the Houston series, fell to 0-1 on the year. He worked 11/3 innings allowing one run on one hit. Charles B. Aycock grad Dustin Sasser lasted six innings allowing four runs on 10 hits.

Amar led the Memphis team offensively going 6-for-6 from the plate with two home runs, a double and five RBI. K.K. Chalmers finished with three hits, with Moss, Joey Lieberman and Barton each collecting two hits. Five different Tigers belted home runs on the day.

Jake Smith finished the day going 4-for-5 from the plate with two RBI. Harrison Eldridge pounded out three hits, while Dale Mollenhauer, Brandon Henderson, and Ryan Tousley each had two hits.

ECU will be back in action next Wednesday when they face Tulane in the first game of the 2006 Conference USA Baseball Championships in Houston at 10 a.m.

FRIDAY NIGHT

Memphis 7, ECU 5

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- Will Petersen's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth gave Memphis a 7-5 lead and they never looked back as they defeated East Carolina 14-6 Friday afternoon at Nat Buring Stadium.

Neil Schenk picked up his second win of the season after pitching the final 31/3 innings, where he allowed one run on five hits and struck out one. Freshman starter Scott McGregor worked 52/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and fanning two.

Shane Mathews suffered the loss for the Pirates and fell to 5-3 on the year after working 52/3 innings and allowing six run on ten hits, despite striking out eight batters. ECU used four pitchers in relief in Kevin Rhodes, Mike Flye, Chris Powell and Carter Harrell. The four combined to pitch 21/3 innings and gave up eight runs on 10 hits. Eight Tiger batters collected two or more hits and they were led by Cory Barton and his 4-for-5 performance at the plate. He finished with three RBI and one run scored. First baseman Adam Amar had three hits including a home run.

For the Pirates, Dale Mollenhauer and Jake Smith each collected two hits and each connected on the long ball. Jake Dean had one hit and scored two runs.
