At the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association east regional held at Rosewood on Saturday, the Eagles' boys and girls teams qualified for the state championships in six events each.

The Eagles' boys 4x100 team of Josh Gibson, Stephen McIntyre, Josh Myers and Josh Bennett won the 4x200 relay, while the 4x100 team and 4x800 team finished third and fourth, respectively, and also qualified.

Individually, Bradley Mullens (4th, pole vault, 8-06), Chris Holmes (2nd, triple jump, 4-10) and Jeremy Hill (4th, shot put, 42-03) qualifed for the state meet.

In the girls' regional, Rosewood's Sa'Coya Cox finished first in the shot put (31-11) and second in the discus (109-10). Erica Murray won the pole vault at 8-00, while Oliva Neal took third in the same event at 7-00. Rosewood's 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams both finished third.

The state championships will be held Friday and Saturday at N.C. A&T University in Greensboro.

Golf

Warren fourth

at 1-A championship

SILER CITY -- After the first day of play at the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association golf championship at Siler City Country Club, Spring Creek's Stephen Warren is currently tied with East Surry's John Weldon for fourth place with a 73.

Warren, making his second straight championship apperance, and Weldon are three strokes back of East Surry's Johnson York and Jordan-Matthews' Craig Wood, who both shot 70 on the first day.

Keyed by Scott Woodard's 74, Princeton is ninth in the team scoring at 349. Ayden-Grifton is currently sixth at 340, while North Johnston is eighth at 346.

East Surry, the defending state champion, leads the team scoring at 299.

The final day of play began today at 8 a.m. with a total of 84 golfers competing.

Aycock 11th

FOX FIRE VILLAGE -- Charles B. Aycock finished the first day of play at the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association golf championship with a team score of 330.

Among 12 team qualifiers, the Golden Falcons are six strokes behind Havelock in 10th place.

Drew Page of Waynesville Tuscola holds a one-shot lead over the field. Page's three-under 69 at the Fox Fire Resort and Country Club West Course puts him one stroke ahead of Wilson Fike's John T.Griffin and Gastonia Forestview's Harold Varner, who are tied for second.

Tuscola, which placed seventh in last year's 3-A state tournament, leads the team totals with a 293, six shots ahead of Hickory. Wilson Fike is third at 302 and Gastonia Forestview fourth at 303.

No individual scores were available for the Aycock golfers.

The two-day tournament will conclude on Tuesday, with the first golfers teeing off at 8 a.m. A total of 84 golfers are competing.

Dixie Youth Majors

WCDS 8, Rosewood Eagles 1 -- Cody Neal picked up the win, while Cole Davis pitched solid in relief. Neal, Davis, Hil Tanner and Aaron Debusk paced WCDS (9-0) at the plate. WCDS hosts Grantham on Thursday.

Grantham 19, Rosewood Eagles 1 -- Jeremy Taylor had three hits and picked up the win in five innings of work on the mound. Matt Sparks, Drake Shaw, Keenan Winn, Jacob Sasser and Taylor Brock paced Grantham (6-0) at the plate.

Babe Ruth Majors

Northwest 12, Grantham 9 -- Carl Johnson led Grantham at the plate, while Wesley Grady endured the loss on the mound. Grantham fell to 9-3 on the season.
