Chargers' Davis, Ryan Ford combine for five-hitter

Travis Davis and Ryan Ford combined for a five-hit shutout in Wayne Country Day's 9-0, opening-round victory over Village Christian in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A baseball playoffs.
Davis yielded three hits and struck out four in four innings. Ford provided three innings of two-hit, two-strikeout relief.
Trent Langston homered for the sixth-seeded Chargers, who beat Village Christian in the regular-season finale for both teams last Tuesday. Langston concluded the day 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Kevin Herring added two hits and two RBI in four at-bats. Ford, Kyle Pender, Sam Steed and Cameron Ford each contributed one hit.
Wayne Country Day (12-9) travels to High Point Christian, the No. 3 seed, on Tuesday. Game time is 4:30 p.m.
Softball
Rams oust Hawks
BETHEL -- North Lenoir left-hander Brittany Sanders threw a five-hitter and struck out nine batters, but Greene Central emerged victorious 3-2 in the semifinals of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference softball tournament Saturday afternoon.
Kayla Sutton and Timon Jones each had two hits for the Hawks.
North Lenoir fell to 15-9 overall.
