DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Lauren Darden yielded just four hits in a complete-game shutout as the fourth-seeded Saints moved on to the semifinals of the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference tournament with a 4-0 win over Kinston on Monday.

Southern Wayne (15-10), which has to win the tournament to guarantee a trip to the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, will travel to No. 1 Charles B. Aycock tonight for a 7 p.m. start.

"They know the next game we lose, we go home. Aycock has beaten us twice, but the last time we played it was a decent game," Southern Wayne coach Brad Matthews said. "It's all or nothing and they know that."

Darden finished with seven strikeouts and no walks as she improved to 15-9 in her freshman campaign.

Alyssa Bradshaw paced the Saints at the plate with two hits and an RBI, while Meredith Davis drove in two runs and Lindsey Pearsall knocked home one.

Bobbi Harris endured the loss for the Vikings, who concluded the season at 5-15-1.

Rebels stay

in playoff chase

PRINCETON -- North Duplin's Heather Hudson and Kayla Myers had two hits each as the Rebels defeated Princeton, 3-2 on Monday.

The win pulls the Rebels (14-4 overall) even with Ayden-Grifton in a tie for the second and final guaranteed N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff spot. North Duplin and Ayden-Grifton have identical, 6-2 league marks and both have two games remaining. North Johnston leads the league at 7-1.

Jessica Pridgen went the distance on the mound for the Rebels -- striking out six against one walk and giving up just two hits and one earned run.

Princeton (3-12 overall) slipped to 2-6 in league play heading into today's game at home against Rosewood.

North Duplin hosts Spring Creek today, before traveling to Rosewood on Wednesday to complete a suspended game.

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Daniel Gerrell had two hits, including a three-run home run, and four RBIs as the Bulldogs claimed a 13-0 win over North Duplin on Monday.

The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Ryan Daughtry added two hits and drove in three runs for Princeton (14-4 overall), which improved to 8-0 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference heading into today's home contest against Rosewood. The Bulldogs finish up the regular season at Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday in the completion of a suspended game.

Colin Parker, one of four pitchers used by Princeton, picked up the win in relief. Dustin Pate, Kyle Harmon and Chris Hinton also saw work on the mound for the Bulldogs.

Chris Graham endured the loss for North Duplin (6-11, 1-7), which hosts Spring Creek today then concludes the season at Rosewood on Wednesday in the completion of a suspended game.

Wade Sasser, Doug Lloyd and Will Lewis had the Rebels' hits.

qualify for state meet

AYDEN -- Ayden-Grifton captured the regional title with a team score of 340, while North Johnston (346) and Princeton (354) finished second and third, respectively at the Class 1-A east regionals as all three qualified as teams for the state championships.

Playing on his home course at Ayden Country Club, the Chargers' Cameron Taylor emerged the regional champion with a medalist round of 75, five strokes ahead of teammate Adam Andrews.

Rosewood's Shane Ogburn (81) and Spring Creek's Stephen Warren (78) and Pat Wilkens (80) qualified as individuals for the state meet, which will be held May 15 and 16 at Siler City Country Club. -- Greenville Reflector

In an event played on Saturday at Lane Tree Golf Course, Goldsboro's Kevin Parker fired a 79 to finish third in the B Flight.

In the C Flight, Goldsboro native Trent Parker claimed first with an 82, while Robert Davidson (86) and Ed Baker (94) finished fifth and 13th, respectively.

The next Down East event is slated for May 20 at Bradford Creek in Greenville.

WCDS suffers

home loss

Wayne Country Day's Kevin Martell claimed his teams lone singles win as the Chargers fell, 7-2 to Greenfield School on Monday afternoon at Wayne Community College.

WCDS (9-7 overall) slipped to 1-6 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference play.

The Chargers' No. 1 doubles combo of David Wilson and Ross Wilson also emerged with a win.
