Southern Wayne graduate Tommy Davis, a three-year starter at North Carolina at defensive end, signed a free agent contract to play with the New Orleans Saints on Monday.

As a senior in 2005, Davis posted 10 tackles for a loss of 74 yards and eight sacks -- both team-highs. He finished with 40 total tackles (19 solo, 21 assists) in North Carolina's 5-6 campaign. Davis currently holds the school record with a 460-pound bench press.

The Dudley native joined a group of 13 rookie free agents signed by New Orleans on Monday, including East Carolina linebacker Chris Moore and Virginia kicker Connor Hughes.

New Orleans finished just 3-13 last year under former coach Jim Haslett. Sean Payton, formerly an assistant with the Dallas Cowboys, was named as the Saints' coach in the offseason. New Orleans played its "home" games at both San Antonio, Tex. and Shreveport, La. last year due to Hurricane Katrina, but will return to the Superdome in 2006.
