Hamilton's 3-run homer sinks Pirates

GREENVILLE -- Mark Hamilton's three-run home run in the top of the fifth gave Tulane a 6-1 lead and the Green Wave never looked back as they defeated the Pirates 6-4 on Sunday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

With the win, Tulane (30-16, 7-8) takes the weekend series and moves into a tie for third place with ECU (28-17, 7-8) in the Conference USA standings.

Billy Mohl picked up his seventh win of the season after working 52/3 innings and giving up two runs on seven hits with three strike outs. Trey Martin made his 21st appearance of the year when he relieved Mohl in the sixth inning. He went 21/3 innings allowing one run on one hit before giving way to Daniel Latham, recorded his ninth save of the season and 28 for his career which ties a school record.

C.B. Aycock grad Dustin Sasser dropped to 4-5 on the year after allowing six runs on seven hits with a pair of strikeouts in five innings of work. Josh Dowdy bridged the gap between Sasser and Scott Andrews working 1/3 of an inning and giving up three hits. Andrews worked a scoreless 22/3 innings, striking out four and allowing four hits before giving way to Mike Flye who worked a perfect ninth inning.

North Carolina 7, Duke 1

DURHAM -- Josh Horton went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a solo home run to lead North Carolina past Duke 7-1 on Sunday.

Daniel Bard (6-2) struck out six over six innings and allowed just one run on four hits and two walks for the Tar Heels (39-8, 18-6 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Jonathan Hovis and Matt Danford allowed just one hit in three innings of relief.

Benji Johnson went 2-for-3 with a home run and two runs scored. North Carolina scored the game's first runs on an RBI double by Horton in the fourth inning.

Duke (14-33, 6-18) answered in the bottom of the inning when Javier Socorro was hit by a pitch then scored on a single down the right field line by Jonathan Nicolla to make it 1-1.

The Tar Heels took control for the rest of the game after Johnson homered in the fifth.

Jimmy Gallagher (1-4) allowed two runs on just three hits and one walk over five innings to get the loss.

Miami 12, N.C. State 10

RALEIGH -- Blake Tekotte went 2-for-5 with three RBIs to help lead Miami to a 12-10 win against North Carolina State on Sunday.

Yonder Alonso and Roger Tomas each added two RBIs for the Hurricanes (29-16, 14-10 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Danny Gil (2-1), the fifth of six Miami pitchers, worked 22/3 shutout innings to get the win. Chris Perez pitched 12/3 innings to get the save.

Jon Still went 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead the Wolfpack (32-15, 14-10).

Sam Walls (5-2) allowed five runs on five hits over 21/3 innings to get the loss.
