WILSON -- Freshman infielder John Wooten doubled and drove in three runs as Eastern Wayne humbled Wilson Hunt 10-0 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference encounter Tuesday evening.

Wooten concluded the day 4-for-4 in the Warriors' 17-hit attack.

Joey Moye added two hits, including a double, in three plate appearances. Senior Tyler Ham, who also claimed the pitching win, delivered two hits and an RBI.

Taylor Sutton doubled in a 3-for-4 effort. Freshman Walker Gourley added two hits and three RBI. Nolan Lancaster (two RBI) and Chris Brown (RBI) each contributed one hit.

"We hit the ball all over the place ... we exploded," said Eastern Wayne coach Jabo Fulghum, whose team notched its first shutout of the season. "Everybody hit the ball good. Everything was clicking on all cylinders and the kids were hungry.

"We played extremely well and I'm proud of the kids for the way they've handled themselves through the little losing skid we had. We could have hung our heads, but we've come back wanting to play baseball."

Ham (4-2) yielded four hits and struck out seven in a complete-game performance.

Hunt's Matt Watson suffered the mound loss.

Officials called the contest after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

Weather permitting, Eastern Wayne (8-11, 4-3 ECC) is scheduled to entertain Wilmington New Hanover this afternoon. Hunt (5-13) dipped to 3-4 in conference play.

CBA tosses shutout

KINSTON -- Shortstop Will Spence banged out three hits and state-ranked Charles B. Aycock remained the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference leader with a 4-0 victory over Kinston.

Joseph Toler and Brandon Price each added two hits for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 20-1 overall and 7-0 in the ECC. Garrett Davis provided an RBI triple and Bradley Taylor delivered an RBI single.

Brandon Price rose to 7-1 on the mound with a four-strikeout, three-hit effort in five innings. Davis and Jackson Massey combined for two innings of one-hit, six-strikeout relief.

Andy Spence endured the pitching loss for the Vikings, who remained winless in 17 outings.

C.B. Aycock entertains Wilson Hunt at 7 p.m. Friday.

Saints keep

pace in league

WILSON -- Southern Wayne erupted for nine, third-inning runs and rolled past Wilson Beddingfield 11-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play on Tuesday evening.

The Saints, who have won five of their last six games, improved to 12-7 overall and 6-1 in the conference. They travel to Wilmington Hoggard today and entertain Kinston on Friday.

Chris Massey doubled twice and plated three runs in a 3-for-4 outing. Senior shortstop Austin Hood doubled twice and produced two RBI in a 3-for-4 performance. Brady Wiggins doubled and finished the day 2-for-3, while T.J. Hinson plated two runs.

Ashton Langston emerged the winning pitcher and fanned nine Bruins in a complete-game effort. The lanky right-hander allowed two hits in the contest, which was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Chargers squeeze

out CPIC road win

WILSON -- Cory Robert delivered a key, two-RBI triple in the seventh inning and Wayne Country Day rallied past Greenfield 6-5 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference game at historic Fleming Stadium.

The Chargers trailed 5-3 heading into the seventh when Robert capped the three-run outburst.

"That was a huge win for us," said WCDS coach Michael Taylor. "Our last four games we have been down in the seventh inning and we've outscored our opponents 17-2 in the last inning.

"We're fighting hard ... scrapping and never giving up."

Kevin Herring led the state-ranked Chargers with three hits in three at-bats. Sam Steed and Travis Davis (RBI) each doubled in a two-hit effort. Kyle Pender contributed two hits and an RBI.

Ryan Ford picked up the mound win in relief of Davis.

Wayne Country Day entered the game tied for fifth with county rival Wayne Christian in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll. The Chargers (8-5, 2-4 CPIC) travel to Halifax Academy on Friday.

FARMVILLE -- Sthil Sowers, Andrew Manning and John Alphin combined for four home runs as North Lenoir pounded Farmville Central 12-2 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Tuesday evening.

Sowers ended the contest 2-for-3 with three RBI. Manning, who homered twice, drove in three runs. Alphin batted 2-for-2 with three RBI.

Brandon Sutton, the winning pitcher, provided two hits in three at-bats. On the mound, Sutton surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out eight.

Officials called the contest after six innings due to the 10-run rule.

North Lenoir (19-1, 6-0 EPC) entertains Tarboro High at 7 p.m. Friday.

Greene Central

takes EPC thriller

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central pushed across the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth and edged North Pitt 5-4 on the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference scene.

Drew Sowers and Trey Beamon (RBI) each had key hits for the Rams.

Hunter Chase picked up the mound win in relief of Sowers, who allowed seven hits and fanned 11 Panther batters in eight innings.

Clark Harrington was the losing pitcher.

Greene Central (11-8, 4-2 EPC) is the guest of Goldsboro on Friday.

suffers road loss

KINSTON -- Faith Christian's Josh Brannan brought home his team's lone run in a 7-1 loss at Bethel Christian of Kinston on Monday.

The Conquerors (8-4 overall) committed five errors, leading to six unearned runs against a trio of pitchers.

Rusty Winders and Jeremy Sandlin also had hits for Faith, which hosted Greenville Christian on Tuesday.

Despite yielding just one hit in four innings of work, Jay Hinson suffered the loss on the mound for the Conquerors. Allen Ray Darby and T.J. Sasser pitched one inning of relief work each.

Goldsboro falls

to Tarboro High

TARBORO -- Cedric McClary collected a fielder's choice RBI and Donald Lewis doubled in Goldsboro's 12-2 loss at Eastern Plains 2-A rival Tarboro High on Tuesday evening.

Lewis eventually scored on a passed ball for the Cougars, who fell to 0-13 overall and 0-6 in the EPC. Monquavius Edwards cranked out a hit on the historic Municipal Stadium diamond.

McClary suffered the pitching loss.

Goldsboro is the guest of Rosewood this afternoon.

Panthers roll

past N. Duplin

KENLY -- Travis Jones doubled twice and delivered three RBI in North Johnston's 15-5 victory over North Duplin in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Will Lewis doubled and plated two runs for the Rebels, who fell to 6-9 overall and 1-5 against Carolina Conference opposition. They continue play Thursday at league-leader and state-ranked Princeton.

WILSON -- Wilson Beddingfield tallied a pair of sixth-inning runs and turned back Southern Wayne 3-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

"We made mental defensive mistakes in the sixth inning that hurt us," said Saints coach Brad Matthews.

Rachel Reynolds belted a second-inning home run for Southern Wayne, which fell to 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the ECC. Brianna Lofton and Morgan Davis each singled.

Lauren Darden suffered the pitching loss.

Ana Cooke picked up the mound win for the Bruins, who rose to 14-3 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Southern Wayne, weather permitting, is the guest of East Duplin today.

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir continued its quest for its fifth consecutive Eastern Plains 2-A regular-season title with a 4-3 victory over Farmville Central.

The Hawks (12-6) improved to 4-1 in the EPC and remained one-half game behind unbeaten North Pitt. They continue play on the road Friday at Tarboro High.

Kayla Sutton led North Lenoir with three hits in four at-bats against the Jaguars. Nichole Howard batted 1-for-3 with two RBI.

Left-hander Brittany Sanders struck out 15 and allowed two hits en route to the pitching win.

Hunt shuts

down E. Wayne

WILSON -- Brittany Farmer threw a complete-game two-hitter as Wilson Hunt slipped past Eastern Wayne 3-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday evening.

The Warriors (15-4) pulled within one-half game of league front-runner C.B. Aycock heading into today's make-up game at Kinston.

Farmer climbed to 9-2 on the mound and fanned eight Eastern Wayne batters. She also provided two hits offensively, while teammate Casey Strickland contributed two hits in three plate appearances.

Eastern Wayne led 1-0 after 21/2 innings, but Hunt rallied with three runs in a three-inning span.

secures ECC title

Eastern Wayne clinched at least a share of first-ever Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference regular-season championship with a 9-0 victory over county rival C.B. Aycock on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors (12-2) remained perfect in nine outings and moved within one victory of seizing the league's No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs. They conclude regular-season play Thursday afternoon at Kinston.

Drew Ziccardi, Jared Stone, Drew Jackson, Alex Bryant, David Benton and Ben Wines each produced a straight-set win in singles. Ziccardi and Jackson each posted a shutout.

Jackson-Bryant, Ziccardi-Wines and Benton-Eric Barnes each prevailed in doubles.

Junior Georgia Crow notched a natural hat trick (three consecutive goals) in Wayne Country Day's 4-2 victory over Greenfield in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Virginia Best added a first-half goal in the 30th minute for the Chargers, who salvaged a regular-season split against the state-ranked Knights.

Anna Wooten Gauss tallied both goals for Greenfield, which suffered its first defeat in five CPIC outings and exited 6-5 overall.

Chargers keeper Ellen Elmore collected 10 saves.

Wayne Country Day (9-5, 5-2 CPIC) is off until next Monday when Trinity Christian-Greenville pays a visit at 4 p.m.

Hawks remain

unbeaten on year

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Katie Maloney tallied a hat trick in a 6-0 victory over Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A Conference rival North Johnston on Monday.

Haley Bright added two goals and one assist for North Lenoir, while Jordan Hudson scored once and Gabby Hill dished out one assist.

North Lenoir (17-0-1, 7-0 C/EPC) improved to 7-0 in the Classes 2-A Eastern Plains/1-A Carolina Conference heading into today's game at Tarboro High.

Campbell, CBA

take ECC meet

KINSTON -- Ryan Campbell seized medalist honors with a 2-under par 70 and led Charles B. Aycock to a second-place finish overall in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference tournament play at Falling Creek.

Eastern Wayne emerged the top team with a four-player total of 306 and shaved the Golden Falcons' overall lead to six strokes. Aycock posted a four-player score of 307.

Will Vinson and Austin Forrest complemented Campbell's effort with identical 18-hole scores of 77. Jordan Elmore fired an 83.

Warrior sophomore Kyle Ham finished one stroke behind Campbell in medalist play. Nick Barrow carded a 76, followed by Miles Perry (79) and Scott Boyette (84).

Brad Davis turned in a 79 and led Southern Wayne to a fourth-place finish at 350. Casey Best emerged the Saints' second-leading scorer with an 87. Ryan Roberts and Kevin Kornegay chipped with rounds of 92 and 97, respectively.

The ECC Championships have been moved to next Monday afternoon at Willow Springs Country Club in Wilson. Tee time is 1 p.m.

Gators struggle

MOUNT OLIVE -- Short-handed Spring Creek relinquished its 21-stroke lead with a fifth-place finish in a Carolina 1-A Conference meet at Southern Wayne Country Club.

The Gators registered a four-player total of 350 and fell to fourth place in the overall standings. Stephen Warren emerged the Gators' low scorer with a 75, while Pat Wilkens carded a 78.

Ayden-Grifton's Cameron Taylor fired a 4-under-par 68 en route to medalist honors. Teammates Adam Andrews and Matt Tripp contributed 18-hole rounds of 73 and 80, respectively. Lucas Melton rounded out A-G's four-player total with an 83.

Jonathan Lewis led North Duplin with an 80.

Scott Woodard fired a 1-under par 71 for Princeton.

Cresset upends

Eagles ... again

Top-ranked Durham Cresset Christian emerged the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference leader after nipping No. 2-ranked Wayne Christian 152-159 at Walnut Creek on Tuesday afternoon.

Clark Rose led the Eagles, the defending N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association champions, with a nine-hole round of 37. Matt Davis and Chad Smith each contributed a 40. Hayden Gardner fired a 42.

Cresset's Alex Harris claimed medalist honors with a 1-under 35.

Wayne Christian (8-4, 6-2 CCC) entertains Village Christian on Thursday.

Warriors sweep

ECC 3-A meet

WILSON -- Noelle Kelly claimed first in two individual events and Eastern Wayne swept the relays in a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet contested at Wilson Beddingfield.

Kelly covered the 200 dash in 27.65 seconds and returned later to win the 400 in 1:02.86. Teammates Richelle Butler (shot put), Jenita Allen (discus) and Genia Baker (100 dash) each recorded a first-place finish for the Warriors, who easily defeated the host Bruins 86-61.

Hunt was third with 36 points.

LaNiece Sims, Alysa Artis, Kelly Gregoracyk and Yasmine Washington composed the winning the 3,200-meter relay team. Artis, Kelly, Baker and Nikki Allen led the 800 relay team to a first-place time of 1:47.

Baker and the three Allens -- Cqnica, Jenita and Nikki -- posted a meet-best time of 47.1 seconds in the 400 relay. Baker, Artis, Kelly and Nikki Allen teamed up to win the 1,600 relay in 4:34.

Dixie Youth Majors

Grantham 15, Mar Mac Red 5 --David Joyner had three hits for Grantham (3-0), while Drake Shaw, Keenan Winn and Jacob Sasser added two hits each. Wesley Grady picked up the win on the mound for Grantham, which turned two double plays. Nick Lancaster had the lone hit for Mar Mac Red.

Wayne Country Day 15, Seymour Johnson Orioles 0 -- Cody Neal threw three hitless innings and struck out seven, while Aaron Debusk provided one inning of no-hit relief. Jamie Van Horn, Hil Tanner and Cole Davis each had two hits for WCDS. Cody Jackson tripled, while Tanner and Dare Uzzell each ripped a home run. WCDS (5-0) plays Thursday evening at the Boys Club against Mar Mac Red.

Grantham 9, Eastern Wayne Gold 8 -- Drake Shaw singled and tripled for Grantham. Teammates Matt Sparks and Carl Johnson each had two hits, while Taylor Brock doubled. Will Bunch picked up the mound win in relief of starter Keith Jones and struck out 10 in a four-inning stint. Grantham scored the game-winning run on Johnson's RBI groundout in the bottom of the seventh. Grantham improved to 5-2 overall.
