ECU baseball suffers home loss

GREENVILLE -- Chris Koutsavlis tossed his third complete game of the season helping Marshall to a 5-3 win over East Carolina Sunday afternoon at Clark-LeClair Stadium.

Marshall (17-19, 5-10) plated the go ahead runs in the seventh when Brendan Murphy doubled down the right field line scoring Roddy Stieger from first. Adam Ptacek's sacrifice fly scored Murphy to close out the frame.

Koutsavlis, who improved to 6-3 on the season, allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out six without a walk.

Brody Taylor fell to 5-2 on the year, despite giving up five runs on four hits and tossing his second complete game of the season.

Murphy led the Herd offensively going 2-for-3 with a home run, a double and four RBI. Adam Frederick (1-for-4) and Steiger (1-for-4) were the other Marshall batters to collect hits on the day.

Adam Witter and Stephen Batts each collected two of ECU's (27-15, 6-6) seven hits, while Jay Mattox, Jamie Ray and Ryan Wood, who extended his hit streak to 16-games, each added a hit.

The Pirates will continue their current home stand next weekend when they host Tulane in a three-game series at Clark-LeClair Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.

UNC 3-4, N.C. State 2-0

CHAPEL HILL -- Daniel Bard had eight strikeouts over nine shutout innings to lift North Carolina past North Carolina State 4-0 Sunday.

Bard (5-2) allowed no walks and only four hits for the Tar Heels (34-8, 15-6 Atlantic Coast Conference). Chad Flack went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs to extend his hitting streak to nine games for the Tar Heels.

Eryk McConnell (6-3) had five strikeouts and two walks while allowing four runs -- two earned -- and six hits over 52/3 innings to get the loss for the Wolfpack (31-13, 13-8).

The Tar Heels earlier won 3-2 in the completion of a game that was suspended Saturday in the 12th inning because of rain. Freshman Tim Federowicz doubled to lead off the bottom of the 14th inning then scored on a throwing error for the deciding run.

Reliever Andrew Carignan (1-1) retired all five batters he faced to get the win.

Sam Walls (5-1) pitched two innings for the loss.

Maryland 3, Wake Forest 2

WINSTON-SALEM -- Wink Nolan scored from third on a throwing error by Andy Goff to give Maryland the go-ahead run in the eighth and lift the Terrapins past Wake Forest 3-2 on Sunday.

Seth Overbey (2-1) allowed one hit over two scoreless innings in relief to get the win. Brett Cecil gave up one hit and had one strikeout over 11/3 scoreless innings to get his 11th save.

Chad Durakis went 2-for-3 to lead the Terrapins (8-25, 7-17 Atlantic Coast Conference).

Starter Justin Keadle allowed three hits and an earned run with seven strikeouts and three walks over five innings for Wake Forest (30-14, 14-7). Kyle Young (4-2) gave up four hits and one unearned run over one inning in relief to get the loss.
