Seven Trojans on All-CVAC team

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jesse Lancaster was named Freshman of the Year and Mount Olive placed seven players on the all-conference teams as the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Baseball awards were announced Friday at Wilson, N.C., site of the CVAC Tournament.

First baseman Josh Carter, shortstop David Cooper and pitcher Justin Staatz were named to the first team. Designated hitter Josh Harrison, pitcher Phillip Pennington and outfielders Lance Martin and Graham Wooten earned second team honors.

Carter, a junior from Goldsboro, earned All-CVAC honors for the second consecutive year. Carter ranks among the top 30 in the nation with 58 runs batted in and is second in the CVAC with a .402 batting average. He has five home runs this season earned CVAC Player of the Week honors.

Cooper, a sophomore from Edmonton, Alberta, ranks second in the nation with 11 triples and 12th in the nation with 38 stolen bases. He also ranks among the top 25 in runs scored. Cooper has a .399 batting average and was named CVAC Player of the Week for the final week of the regular season.

Staatz, a senior from Woodstock, Md., is also a two-time All-CVAC First Team selection. Staatz leads CVAC starting pitchers with a 2.36 earned run average. Staatz has had two 10-strikeout games this season and is averaging more than nine strikeouts per nine innings pitched. Staatz was named CVAC Pitcher of the Week in early April.

Harrison, a sophomore from Wake Forest, hit .319 with five home runs. Harrison is fifth on the team with 27 runs batted in. He earned CVAC Player of the Week honors in early February.

Pennington, a junior from Goldsboro, earned All-CVAC second team honors for the second consecutive year. A CVAC Player of the Week winner in March, Pennington tossed eight scoreless innings in a win over Erskine.

Martin, a senior from Waldorf, Md., has a .337 batting average and is third in the CVAC in stolen bases with 21. Martin, who had an 11-game hitting streak late in the season, is second on the team in runs scored.

Wooten, a junior from Goldsboro, led the Trojans with six home runs in the regular season. He has a .364 batting average and is third on the team in stolen bases with 16.

Pittman, Harrell named

to All-CVAC Softball team

Outfielder Tiffanie Pittman was named to the first team and Bailey Harrell was selected to the second team as the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Softball awards were announced Friday at Concord, site of the CVAC Tournament.

Pittman, a junior from Riverside, Calif., ranks fourth in the CVAC in hitting with a .374 batting average. A transfer from Riverside Junior College, Pittman hit safely in each of her first 14 games as a Trojan.

Harrell, a sophomore from Kinston, has earned All-CVAC Second Team honors in each of her first two years at Mount Olive. Harrell, who ranks second in the CVAC with 11 home runs, is the first Trojan since 2000 to reach double figures in home runs.
