K-Tribe falls to Myrtle Beach in 10 innings

KINSTON -- A bases-loaded walk in the top of the 10th inning pushed the winning run across the plate for Myrtle Beach as the Pelicans beat the K-Tribe 5-4 Saturday night at Grainger Stadium.

Kinston tied the score at four in the bottom of the eighth inning when Brandon Pinckney scored on a sacrifice fly by Argenis Reyes. After both teams failed to score in the ninth, the Pelicans lead off the 10th inning with back-to-back singles by Mike Rozema and Scott Schade off K-Tribe reliever T.J. Burton. Reid Santos entered the game in relief for Burton, but Onil Joseph greeted Santos with a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners to second and third base.

After an intentional walk to load the bases, Santos struck out J.C. Holt for out number two in the inning. Santos then gave up a walk to Myrtle Beach left fielder Brandon Jones, scoring Rozema and putting the Pelicans ahead 5-4.

T.J. Burton (0-1), picked up the loss for the Indians, Kelvin Villa (1-0) got the win and the Pelicans Dan Smith pitched a scoreless 10th inning for his third save of the year.

The K-Tribe (11-5) and Pelicans (8-9) both have off days today. The K-Tribe will open up a four-game home series with Lynchburg on Monday night at 7 p.m.

FRIDAY

K-Tribe 8, Myrtle Beach 2

KINSTON -- The Kinston Indians beat the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 8-2. The Indians pounded out 12 hits, following up their 17 hit performance on Thursday night.

Kinston got the scoring started in the first inning when Brian Finegan doubled down the left field line scoring Argenis Reyes. Jordan Brown kept the inning going with an RBI single that scored Trevor Crowe. The Indians went up 3-0 in the third inning when Brown notched another RBI with a double down the left field line, scoring Brian Barton.

Up 3-1 in the fourth inning, Finegan added two more RBIs, hitting a triple that drove home Toregas and Reyes. Ryan Goleski put the finishing touches on the win with his first home run of the year, a three-run shot to left field in the seventh inning. Joe Ness (1-0) picked up his first win in three starts this year, going five innings giving up three hits and two runs. Jake Stevens (0-4) picked up his fourth straight loss.

INTERNATIONAL LEAGUE

Pawtucket 9, Durham 5

DURHAM -- Hee-Seop Choi and Jim Buckley each got two-run homers to lead Pawtucket to a 9-5 victory over Durham in an International League game Friday.

Bulls reliever Jon Switzer surrendered Buckley's two-run homer over the wall in the left field to conclude the game's scoring.
