Snyder earns all-CVAC honors in women's golf

MOUNT OLIVE -- For the first time in Mount Olive women's golf history, the Trojans captured two all-conference selections with Lindsey Snyder on the first team and Kate Somek earning honorable mention as the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Golf awards were announced Thursday at Hartsville, S.C., site of the CVAC Championship. The Mount Olive women's golf program is in its fourth year of existence.

Snyder, a senior from Goldsboro (Eastern Wayne HS), becomes the Trojans' first-ever three-time women's golf All-CVAC selection. Snyder finished in the top 10 four times in seven tournaments in 2005-06, including a second-place finish at the St. Andrews Spring Invitational in March. Snyder was named to the first team in 2004 and earned second team honors in 2005.

Somek, a junior from Sudbury, Ontario, notched three top 10 finishes in six tournaments in 2005-06. She finished eighth at last year's CVAC Championship and earned All-Tournament honors. She shot a school record 77 in the final round, which included a 135-yard eagle on the 15th hole.

Mount Olive opened play Thursday at the CVAC Championship. The 54-hole tournament concludes Saturday.

Men's golf

Mount Olive golfer Mick Moberg was named to the all-conference second team as the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Golf awards were announced Thursday at Hartsville, S.C., site of the CVAC Championship.

Moberg, a sophomore from Gavle, Sweden, captured his first-ever individual championship with a win at the St. Andrews Spring Invitational in March. Moberg posted three top-five finishes in five tournaments during the spring. Including five tournaments in the fall, Moberg recorded five top 10 finishes.

Mount Olive opened play Thursday at the CVAC Championship. The 54-hole tournament concludes Friday as teams will play 27 holes each day.

Women's tennis

Lucia Henkle and Mariana Shimoda became the first teammates in Mount Olive history to earn all-conference honors in four consecutive years as the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Tennis awards were announced Thursday at Sumter, S.C., site of the CVAC Tournament. Henkle was named to the first team for the fourth straight year, while Shimoda earned her fourth consecutive second team selection.

Henkle, a senior from Guatemala City, Guatemala, finished with a 9-1 record in conference play at No. 1 singles and combined with Carol Aro for an 8-2 record at No. 1 doubles. Henkle, who is ranked No. 2 in the CVAC in singles and No. 3 in doubles, has a 19-1 record in conference singles matches over the past two years. Henkle was the 2005 CVAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year.

Shimoda, a senior from Sao Paulo, Brazil, split time at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and posted a record of 9-1 in conference play. She combined with Lauren Harris for an 8-2 record at No. 2 doubles. Shimoda ranks No. 9 in the CVAC in singles.

Men's tennis

Mount Olive head coach Burt Lewis was named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive year and Bruno Capato was named Freshman of the Year as the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Tennis awards were announced Thursday at Sumter, S.C., site of the CVAC Tournament.

Mount Olive placed three players on the All-CVAC Team as Gabriel Garcia was named to the first team, Capato was named to the second team and Guillherme Serra earned honorable mention.

Garcia, a sophomore from Guayagill, Ecuador, is ranked No. 2 in the CVAC men's singles top 10 and is part of the CVAC's top-ranked doubles team, along with Efrain Cayama. Garcia is 8-2 in conference play at No. 1 singles and 8-2 in the conference at No. 1 doubles. A second team All-CVAC selection in 2005, Garcia has a career singles record of 18-2 in conference play.

Capato, a freshman from Sao Paulo, Brazil, won his first eight conference matches at No. 2 singles and finished with a 9-1 mark in CVAC play. Capato also combined with Serra for an 8-2 record in the conference at No. 2 doubles. Capato, who earned CVAC Player of the Week honors two weeks ago, is ranked No. 10 in the CVAC in singles.

Serra, a sophomore from Sao Paulo, Brazil, posted a 9-1 record in CVAC play at No. 3 singles and combined with Capato for an 8-2 record at No. 2 doubles. In his two years at Mount Olive, Serra has a career conference record of 19-1 in singles play.

Lewis, who is in his 10th season, guided a starting lineup of three sophomores and three freshmen to a third-place finish in the CVAC standings and a No. 39 national ranking. The Trojans were 8-2 in the conference and 12-13 overall. All of Mount Olive's losses this season came against Division I and nationally-ranked Division II opponents. Lewis was named 2005 CVAC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the Trojans to its first-ever regular season championship and an undefeated conference mark.
