Snyder to compete in collegiate finale

Mount Olive senior women's golfer and Eastern Wayne High School graduate Lindsey Snyder will play in her final collegiate tournament this weekend. And at this year's conference tournament, she'll get to compete for an individual and a team championship.

Mount Olive opens play today in the 2006 Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Golf Tournament at Hartsville, S.C. The three-round tournament is hosted by Coker College and concludes Saturday.

The Mount Olive women's golf program is in its fourth year and Snyder will finish her career as the Trojans' first-ever four-year women's golfer. She is a two-time All-CVAC selection and earned All-Tournament honors at the 2004 Tournament.

In her first three years, Snyder and her teammates competed in the CVAC Tournament as individuals, but the Trojans did not have enough players to compete in the team championship. This year, the Trojans have the required number of players to compete for the team championship.

Last year's conference championship turned out to be a breakout tournament for Kate Somek, now a junior. Somek earned All-Tournament honors and shot a school-record 77 in the final round last year. She hit a 135-yard eagle on the 15th hole at Hartsville Country Club, which is also the course for this year's tournament.

Snyder has four top 10 finishes in seven events this year, while Somek has three top 10 finishes in six events.

"I'm very grateful for what Lindsey has done for Mount Olive women's golf in her four years here," said head women's golf coach Chip Spiron.

"The team has played well this season and I hope we can continue to do so at the tournament."
