SHALLOTTE -- The third time was indeed the charm for Southern Wayne's baseball team at the Beach Diamond Invitational.
In their third appearance in the three-day Easter tournament at West Brunswick High School, the Saints captured the title after a dominant 14-4 win over Bishop Ireton (Va.) on Wednesday.
In three games, Southern Wayne (11-7) outscored its opponents (North Brunswick, North Davidson and Bishop Ireton), 29-6.
"We played good baseball ... swung the bats well, played good defense, threw strikes and made plays behind the pitchers," Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee said. "You feel like any time you win a tournament, you gain momentum and are getting better and heading in the right direction.
"The boys enjoyed getting away, but you could tell they were focused on their goal. We went down there to win it."
On Wednesday, seven different Southern Wayne players had at least two hits. Garrett Barfield (2 2Bs, 3 RBIs), Chris Massey (2B, 2 RBIs), Austin Hood (2 2Bs, 4 SBs, 2 RBIs) and Dave Overman all provided three hits for the Saints. David Combs, Ashton Langston and Tyler Edwards posted two hits each with Edwards, a freshman, smacking his first varsity home run in the fourth inning.
David Combs tossed the Saints' third complete game in as many days, yielding just five hits and one earned run in seven innings of work. Combs (4-3) struck out six with four walks.
Combs, Hood and T.J. Hinson were named to the All-Tournament team.
Southern Wayne returns to Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action on Tuesday at Wilson Beddingfield, then travels to Wilmington Hoggard on Wednesday in non-conference action.
