Davis tosses no-hitter for Ayccok

PIKEVILLE -- Junior right-hander Garrett Davis collected the first no-hitter of his varsity career in Charles B. Aycock's 10-0 conquest of Wilson Beddingfield in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play Tuesday evening.

Davis, who remained unbeaten in five outings, fanned 13 Bruins in a contest shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

"Garrett threw the ball pretty good last night and had command of his curveball," said C.B. Aycock coach Charles Davis. "His change-up worked good and he had a little pop on his fast ball."

Bradley Taylor doubled and tripled, and plated a run in two at-bats. Thomas Pilkington contributed an RBI in a 2-for-2 showing. Will Spence, Joseph Toler and Garrett Davis each delivered an RBI double.

The Golden Falcons, ranked No. 2 in the ImpactBaseball.com 3-A poll, plated three runs in the first inning and five in the second. They added single runs in the fourth and fifth.

"We came out and played up to our capabilities," said coach Davis. "Our goal was to come out and jump on them early, and that's what we did."

C.B. Aycock improved to 16-1 overall and 6-0 in the ECC. The Golden Falcons conclude their pre-Easter schedule at home Thursday against county rival Spring Creek.

Gators collect

first win of year

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Anthony Brogden yielded six hits in a complete-game effort as Spring Creek emerged victorious 6-1 over Carolina 1-A Conference archrival North Duplin on Tuesday evening.

Brogden struck out two, walked one and lost his shutout bid in the seventh.

"Their pitcher did a good job and we didn't get any good hits," surmised North Duplin coach John Avent. "They were able to get their hits with people in scoring position."

The Gators, who snapped a 14-game losing streak, managed six hits. Brogden helped his cause offensively with two hits and three RBI in three at-bats.

Josh Gammon (RBI), Timothy Rogers, Josh Singleton (RBI), Ray Grady and Alex Casey also hit the ball well for Spring Creek.

Doug Lloyd paced North Duplin's offense with two hits in three plate appearances. Teammate Wade Sasser batted 1-for-3.

Chris Graham suffered the mound loss.

North Duplin (5-9, 1-4 Carolina) returns to action Apr. 25 against North Johnston. Spring Creek is the guest of county rival C.B. Aycock on Thursday.

George Walters and Tyler Smith each ripped a grand slam in North Lenoir's 30-0 win over Goldsboro in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

Walters finished the day 2-for-3, while Smith batted 1-for-2. Andrew Manning belted a home run in a 2-for-2 showing, while Josh Best contributed three hits in plate appearances. Spencer Harris added three hits.

North Lenoir (16-1) remained unbeaten in four EPC contests and concludes first-half play at home Thursday against Greene Central.

FARMVILLE -- Craven Taylor belted a three-run, walk-off home run in the seventh inning of Farmville Central's come-from-behind 3-1 triumph over Greene Central on Tuesday.

The Jaguars handed the Rams (9-5) their first Eastern Plains 2-A Conference defeat in four outings.

Hunter Chase doubled in a 2-for-4 outing for Greene Central. Teammates Robert Tyndall batted 1-for-2 with an RBI, while Michael Speedy doubled in two plate appearances.

Greene Central entertains defending EPC champ North Lenoir at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Lancaster shuts

down Bruins

PIKEVILLE -- Julia Lancaster tossed a complete-game three-hitter and Charles B. Aycock turned back Wilson Beddingfield 4-1 on the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference softball scene Tuesday evening.

Lancaster (8-3) recorded five strikeouts and surrendered one earned run for the Golden Falcons, who improved to 10-7 overall and 5-1 in conference play.

Jasmine Dobbin slapped her second home run of the season in the first inning. Shelly Lancaster provided two hits in three at-bats, and Brittany Ford contributed two hits.

Chelsey Byers batted 1-for-2. Leigh Smith, Brittani Edgerton and Rusti Talton each tallied an RBI.

C.B. Aycock returns to action Apr. 24 at Kinston.

Greene Central

gets EPC shutout

SNOW HILL -- Jessica Moore and Cassie Webb combined for a five-hit shutout in Greene Central's 2-0 victory over Farmville Central in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Tuesday.

Moore surrendered three hits in a three inning stint. Webb delivered four innings of five-strikeout, two-hit relief en route to the save.

Webb added two hits and two RBI on offense. Stacey Wade batted 2-for-4.

Greene Central (8-4-1, 3-1 EPC) entertains four-time defending conference champion North Lenoir on Thursday.

Saints cruise

past archrival

Lauren Darden scattered five hits and posted nine strikeouts in Southern Wayne's 9-4 victory over archrival Eastern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Tuesday.

Darden improved to 11-6 on the mound.

Alyssa Bradshaw (two RBI), Rachel Reynolds (RBI), Lindsay Pearsall, Lynn Grantham and Taylor Reaves each had two hits for the Saints.

Eastern Wayne avoided the shutout with four runs in the seventh.

Southern Wayne (11-6, 4-2 ECC) entertains South Lenoir at 4:30 p.m. on Apr. 20.

Princeton

tops Rosewood

April Keene's two-RBI triple helped spark a seven-run outburst in the fifth inning and Princeton cruised past archrival Rosewood 9-5 in Carolina 1-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Rosewood seized a 3-0 lead, but the Bulldogs responded in the latter innings. Keene's run-scoring hit capped the fifth and Brittany Baker provided an RBI single in the sixth.

Ashley Braswell, Catherine Massey, Kortland Stanfield and Brittany Baker each singled for the Bulldogs.

Amber Wood collected three strikeouts and yielded seven hits in a complete-game effort on the mound.

Chandra Meadows, who had two hits offensively, endured the pitching loss for Rosewood. Jessica Price batted 2-for-4. Abigail Barrow, Aubrey Reinhard and Stephanie Rhodes each singled for the Eagles.

Princeton (3-9, 2-3 Carolina) and Rosewood (3-10, 1-4) will take a few days off for Easter Break. The teams return to action Apr. 25.

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Brittany Carr collected three hits and Elizabeth Lane recorded five RBI in North Duplin's 10-2 victory over Spring Creek in Carolina 1-A Conference action Tuesday afternoon.

The Rebels (12-2) remained unbeaten in four league outings.

Kayla Myers, Jessica Pridgen and Kristen Jones (two RBI) each had base hits for North Duplin.

Pridgen scattered two hits and struck out six Gator batters in a complete-game effort.

Lorenda Brogden suffered the pitching loss for Spring Creek, which fell to 1-14 overall and 0-5 in the league.

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne swept the singles matches and remained unbeaten on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene with an 8-1 decision against Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

Jared Stone, Drew Ziccardi, Drew Jackson, David Benton, Ben Wines and Eric Barnes each prevailed in straight sets during singles play.

Stone-Jackson and Benton-Barnes each triumphed in doubles.

The Warriors (10-2, 7-0 ECC) travel to Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday.

Strickland did not lose a game at the No. 4 spot.

Wilson-Strickland and Potts-Correll each picked up a doubles win.

Gabby Hill, Sara Farmer, Jordan Hudson and Sasha Holeman each provided one goal for the Hawks.

Febe Barazza earned the shutout in goal.

Maloney delivered a hat trick and Bright added two goals in Monday's 8-0 shutout at Spring Creek. Helena Davis, Farmer and Holeman each tallied one goal.

Virginia Best registered the hat trick-plus-one (four goals) and seventh-grader Kim Martel added one goal in Wayne Country Day's 5-3 decision against Ahoskie Ridgecroft on Monday afternoon.

Head coach Paul Estrada cited the strong offensive play of Stephanie Knutson, Whitney Nagel and Georgia Crow. The trio combined for 17 of the Chargers' 28 shots on goal.

Caroline Lewis and Kayla Flanigan spearheaded the defense.

Wayne Country Day (7-5) rose to 3-2 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.

Saints suffer

Wilson Hunt maintained its share of the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference lead with a 7-0 decision over Southern Wayne on Tuesday evening.

"Hannah Fields stepped up and played good defense," said Southern Wayne coach Clifton Broadhurst. "Jacqueline Vasquez played good on offense. We hope to do better tonight against Kinston."

The Saints (0-9, 0-6 ECC) entertain the Vikings at 7 p.m.

GREENVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Bryant Hill threw six strong innings, yielding only two runs on five hits in the Golden Falcons' 4-2 win at D.H. Conley on Monday.

Hill struck out seven against no walks, before Jay Rose came on to record the save -- striking out the side in the seventh.

Rose added a triple at the plate, while Will Edgerton, Jordan Carr, Jackson Wooten and Josh Martin also had hits.

Aycock returns to action on April 20 at home against West Craven.

Warriors turn

DUDLEY -- Daniel Swartz rapped two doubles and Eastern Wayne doubled up Southern Wayne 6-3 in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference contest Tuesday afternoon.

Tyler Wicks added a three-RBI home run for the Warriors, who capitalized on eight Saints errors. Chad Gurley added a single.

Ricky Oddon, Robert Herring, Will Harvell and Scott Holloman each singled for Southern Wayne.

The Saints (3-9, 0-4 ECC) plays in an Easter tournament Saturday at D.H. Conley.

tie in four-team meet

MOUNT OLIVE -- C.B. Aycock and Spring Creek battled to a tie during a season-ending, four-team meet contested Tuesday afternoon at Southern Wayne Country Club.

The Golden Falcons and Gators each carded a team total of 196. Eastern Wayne finished third with 200, while the host Saints collected a 203.

No individual scores were available.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 6, Eastern Wayne 3 -- Anderson Barnes belted a home run and Jeff Carmel added two hits for the Cobras. Jordan Quinn emerged the winning pitcher. Norwayne concluded its season 11-2 overall and 6-2 against Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I opposition.

Babe Ruth Majors

Grantham 16, Spring Creek Green 4 -- Grantham's Jeremy Taylor had two singles and picked up the win on the mound. Brandon Graham, Jacob Sasser, Keith Jones and Taylor Brock added two hits each. Grantham improved to 2-1 on the season. Zack Harrell paced Spring Creek at the plate.

Grantham 26, Spring Creek Blue 1 -- Keenan Win and Taylor Brock each belted a home run for Grantham. Will Bunch tripled and provided two singles. Jacob Sasser doubled twice and tripled. Jeremy Taylor,

Drake Shaw and Sam Henderson also contributed several hits in the win. Bunch and Shaw combined for a two-hitter and nine strikeouts on the mound. Grantham climbed to 3-1. Wyatt Jennings provided the lone RBI for Spring Creek.
