Gator golfers tie school record

Spring Creek tied a school record with a team score of 315 -- winning a Class 1-A Carolina Conference match at Walnut Creek on Monday.

The Gators (315), who now lead North Johnston by one stroke in the season scoring, were followed by Princeton (320) and North Johnston (327). Ayden-Grifton (332), Rosewood (354) and North Duplin (434) rounded out the team scoring.

Pat Wilkens paced the Gators with a 75, while Stephen Warren (76), Dustin Wood (79), Blake Roasay (85), Daniel Chewning (87) and Nathan Ford (88) also participated for Spring Creek.

Rosewood's Shane Ogburn paced the Eagles with a 78, as Joey Wagner (85), Gentry Minchew (93) and Bradley Hill (98) contributed to Rosewood's score.

Princeton's Scott Woodard claimed medalist honors with a 70. Jonathan Lewis was North Duplin's leader at 98.

The next Carolina match is Wednesday at Goldsboro Country Club.

Eagles suffer

rare CCC loss

DURHAM -- Cresset Christian handed Wayne Christian its first Carolina Christian 1-A Conference loss in three years as Cresset topped the Eagles, 152-157 on Monday at Cedar Grove.

Matt Davis paced Wayne Christian (7-3, 6-1 CC) with a 38. Clark Rose (39), Eric Williams (40), Chad Smith (40), Hayden Gardner (43) and Andrew Radford (48) contributed to the Eagles' team score.

Cresset's Alex Harris claimed medalist honors with a 34.

Wayne Christian travels to Greenfield School on Thursday.

Rams edge

North Lenoir

TARBORO -- North Lenoir's Blair Cruz claimed medalist honors with a 73 in a Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference match at Cotton Valley on Monday.

Greene Central won the match with a team score of 305, just edging North Lenoir at 306. Tarboro (328), Farmville Central (346) and North Pitt (400) rounded out the team scoring.

Josh Elmore led the Rams with a 74, while Blake Sutton (75), Brandon Jones (76) and Colby Murphy (80) also contributed for Greene Central.

The Rams return to action after Easter break.

Schlaeppi tallies

first hat trick

KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock junior Amanda Schlaeppi tallied a natural hat trick (three straight goals) in the first half as the Golden Falcons cruised to an 8-0 win at Kinston on Monday.

The hat trick was the first of Schlaeppi's career.

Lizzie Sodoma added two goals for Aycock (5-9-2, 4-2-1 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference), while Mariko Lydecker, Yoselin Martinez and Nida Waheed posted one goal each.

The Falcons return to action on Wednesday at home against Wilson Hunt at 5 p.m.

Bruins blank

short-handed Saints

WILSON -- Southern Wayne's Leigh Ann Jarman fired four shots on goal in the Saints' 7-0 loss at Wilson Beddingfield on Monday.

The Bruins scored three in the first half, then four in the second half to pull away.

With several players out, the Saints had to play the first half with 10 players, before finishing the game with nine players on the field.

Southern Wayne coach Clifton Broadhurst praised the effort of Jessica Howell on defense. Saints' goalie Michelle Joyner had 15 saves in goal.

The Saints (0-9, 0-6 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference) host Wilson Hunt tonight.

Rhodes gets

first career win

CLINTON -- North Duplin junior Will Lewis picked up his first career win in four innings of relief work as the Rebels defeated Union, 10-8 on Monday in non-conference play.

Lewis yielded just two hits and three runs (two earned) with three walks and four strikeouts. Lewis relieved starting pitcher Brad Rhodes, who tossed three innings and gave up five runs on five hits.

Billy Mello paced North Duplin (6-7) at the plate with four hits, while Ryan Killette had two hits and drove in two runs.

The Rebels travel to Spring Creek today in a Class 1-A Carolina Conference contest.

Hawks shut

out Kinston

North Lenoir's John Alphin tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight in five innings of work as the Hawks tallied a 12-0 win at Kinston High on Monday in non-conference play.

Tyler Smith, Bryce Grady, Andrew Manning, Stihl Sowers and Brandon Sutton doubled for the Hawks (15-1).

All nine starters had a hit for North Lenoir, who travels to Goldsboro in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action today.

Softball

Eagles take two

from Cougars

Wayne Christian claimed a pair of non-conference wins over Goldsboro High at home on Monday.

The Eagles won the first game, 18-0, then took the second game 17-0.

Brittany Sullivan had a home run in the second game, and Michelle Krug had a double in the first game. Every WCS player scored at least two times on the afternoon. Traci Davis and Sullivan tallied the wins on the mound.

Wayne Christian (11-1) hosts Rocky Mount Prep and Mount Calvary in a doubleheader on Thursday.

Rebels suffer

road loss

CLINTON -- North Duplin's Casey Pate tallied one hit and an RBI in the Rebels' 13-4 loss at Union on Monday in a non-conference contest. Jodie Williamson and Jessica Pridgen also had hits for North Duplin (11-2).

Kayla Myers endured the loss on the mound for the Rebels, yielding 13 runs (10 earned) on 12 hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Myers got little help from her defense, which committed 10 errors.

North Duplin travels to Spring Creek today in Class 1-A Carolina Conference action.

KINSTON -- Wayne Country Day suffered a 6-3 loss at Arendell Parrott Academy on Monday in non-conference play.

Ross Wilson, Fred Ha and Kevin Martell claimed the lone wins for the Chargers (9-3).

The Patriots swept all three doubles matches.

Wayne Country Day returns to action on Thursday at home against Rocky Mount Academy.

Grantham baseball 23, Brogden 10 -- Grantham's Steve Carlton had three hits, including a triple and a double, while Richard Custer added three hits with a double. Will Broadwell, Miles Hinton and Dean Grady combined for 14 strikeouts on the mound for Grantham (6-4-1, 5-0), which hosts Goldsboro on May 1.

Dixie Youth 11-12

WCDS baseball 9, Wayne Co. Falcons 1 -- Russell Turner got the win on the mound for WCDS (4-0). Cody Neal, Jayme Van Horn, Hil Tanner, Cole Davis and Turner paced WCDS at the plate. On Saturday, WCDS captured the preseason tournament at Mar Mac with wins over the Wayne County Falcons, Boys Club Mustangs and Saulston.
