Eastern Wayne netters blank Saints

Eastern Wayne's top three seeds posted straight-set shutouts in a 9-0 victory over Southern Wayne on the Wayne Community College courts Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors (9-2) remained unbeaten in six Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference matches.

"Southern Wayne has a better team than they have had in years," said veteran Eastern Wayne coach Nancy Dawson. "Their four, five and six players are stronger. My top three played great."

Jared Stone, who moved back into the No. 1 slot; Drew Ziccardi and Drew Jackson each prevailed 6-0, 6-0. David Benton, a first-year varsity performer, triumphed 6-1, 6-0. Ben Wines claimed a 6-0, 6-3 decision and Eric Barnes outlasted the Saints' Thomas Deaver 6-1, 7-6 (4).

Ziccardi-Stone, Jackson-Wines and Benton-Barnes each seized a doubles win.

Eastern Wayne is the guest of Wilson Hunt next Tuesday afternoon, while Southern Wayne (1-5 ECC) travels to Wilson Beddingfield.

Bruins cruise

PIKEVILLE -- Blake Cooper seized the lone singles victory in Charles B. Aycock's 7-2 loss against Wilson Beddingfield on the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference scene.

Cooper, the Golden Falcons' No. 1 seed, dropped the opening set against the Bruins' Justin Webb. He rebounded for a 2-6, 6-4, 11-9 victory. Later in the day, Cooper and Ben Evans teamed for an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles against Tony Arizpe-Darren Gardner.

C.B. Aycock fell to 1-15 overall and 1-5 in the ECC.

The Golden Falcons endured a 9-0, non-conference loss Wednesday afternoon against perennial 2-A power Greene Central.

Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo, Bryan Pollock, Spencer Dail, Trey Cash and James Kersey emerged with singles wins for the Rams. The doubles combinations of Moore-Nimmo, Dail-Cash and Andrew Harrison and Jason Perry finished off the sweep.

Wildcats upset

No. 3 Princeton

NEWTON GROVE -- Hobbton rallied for three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning and upset state-ranked Princeton 3-2 on Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs held a 2-0 lead before the Wildcats, of the Super Six 1-A Conference, posted three earned runs against right-handed reliever Patrick Gatewood. Gatewood yielded four hits and collected one strikeout in two-thirds of an inning.

Kyle Harmon started and recorded four strikeouts in two innings. Dustin Pate and Chris Hinton each threw two innings, and combined for five strikeouts.

Will Herring and Dustin Bryan each had two hits and a double for Hobbton.

Princeton managed four hits against Wildcat right-hander Jason Warren, who threw a complete game.

The Bulldogs (8-3), ranked No. 3 in the latest ImpactBaseball.com 1-A poll, entertain state-ranked Ayden-Grifton today. Game time is 7 p.m. on the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex diamond.

Spartans pull

out CPIC victory

State-ranked Kerr-Vance Academy survived a seventh-inning uprising against host Wayne Country Day and escaped with an 8-6 victory in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play.

The Spartans, ranked No. 2 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 2-A poll, improved to 12-3 overall and 3-0 against CPIC opposition.

Trailing 8-2, the Chargers answered with a four-run outburst in their final at-bat. Kevin Herring produced a run-scoring double and Trent Langston contributed an RBI single. Wayne Country Day also benefited from two walks and a Spartan defensive miscue.

Herring concluded the day 3-for-4 with two RBI. Travis Davis batted 2-for-4, including a double, and two RBI. Langston, Cameron Ford (double), Ryan Ford and Cory Robert each rapped a base hit.

Ryan Ford endured the pitching loss in relief of Davis. Ford surrendered two runs (one earned) on three hits and struck out three in four innings of work. Davis allowed six runs (five earned) on six hits and struck out four Spartans in three innings.

Wayne Country Day (6-6, 1-3 CPIC) travels to Flora MacDonald Academy today.

KINSTON -- Nine different players tallied at least one goal in North Lenoir's 11-0, non-conference win over county rival Kinston on Thursday evening.

Katie Maloney and Haley Bright each collected two goals for the Hawks, who improved to 13-0-1 overall.

North Lenoir continues Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference play Monday evening at Spring Creek. Game time is 6 p.m.

Chargers shut

down So. Wayne

Wayne Country Day completed its regular-season sweep of county foe Southern Wayne with an 8-0, non-conference victory Thursday afternoon.

The injury-riddled Saints competed with 10 players, according to head coach Clifton Broadhurst.

"We're doing the best we can ... trying to keep everything together," said Broadhurst. "We're playing real hard."

Additional details were not available at press time.

Southern Wayne (0-7) travels to C.B. Aycock this afternoon. Meanwhile, Wayne Country Day (6-4) returns to conference play at home against Kerr-Vance Academy.

Rebels claim key

Carolina 1-A win

AYDEN -- North Duplin's Brittany Carr scored her team's lone run in a 1-0 win at home over Ayden-Grifton on Wednesday in Carolina 1-A Conference action.

The Rebels improved to 10-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play, while the Chargers slipped to 8-5 overall and 2-1 against league foes.

Kayla Myers picked up the win for North Duplin, striking out eight and yielding just one hit with two walks in seven innings of work.

Carr, Jodie Williamson, Heather Hudson, Jessica Pridgen and Ashley Cartwright all had hits for the Rebels, who host Rosewood today.

Allison Frazier endured the loss for Ayden-Grifton.

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood's Courtney Hill slugged a home run and provided two RBI in the Eagles' 8-4 loss at Farmville Central on Wednesday.

Rosewood led 1-0 early, then took a 4-3 lead after 61/2 innings. The Jaguars posted five runs in the bottom of the sixth to pull away.

Jessica Joyner, Brooke Modlin and Kimber Hall paced Farmville (6-6) at the plate.

Aubrey Reinhard endured the loss for the Eagles.

The Eagles (3-8) travel to North Duplin today.

Saints compete

in ECC meet

WILSON -- Southern Wayne captured first place in five girls events and claimed four victories an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet contested at Wilson Hunt.

The Lady Saints were paced by Christy Dixon, who won the 100 (13.06 seconds) and 200 (1:07). Ebony Darden took the high jump (5 feet, zero inches), while Yolanda Rodriquez claimed the 1600 (6:40).

Anthony Council ran a 10.82 in the 100 meters to claim first as teammates Randy Faire (triple jump; 40-9), Joseph Davis (discus; 117-4) and the 800-meter relay team of Faire, Council, Derrick Lathan and Chris Faison (1:33.6) also won their events.

The Saints are slated to host Charles B. Aycock and Hunt in an ECC meet next Tuesday.

Golf

Havelock takes

non-league match

HAVELOCK -- Havelock's Tyler Biscup took medalist honors and led his team to victory in a three-team, non-conference match on Wednesday afternoon at Carolina Pines.

Havelock finished with a team score of 302, while North Lenoir (324) and Greene Central (329) rounded out the team scoring.

Brandon Jones paced Greene Central with a 78, while teammates Josh Elmore (79), Blake Sutton (82) and Josh Ribiero (90) also participated.

Greene Central and North Lenoir travel to Tarboro on Monday to face their Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference foes at Cotton Valley.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 16, Greenwood 0 -- Jeff Carmel, David Gurganus, Conner Narron and Jordan Quinn each had two hits for the Cobras. Quinn emerged the winning pitcher. Norwayne (10-2, 5-2 WCMSAC Division I) concludes regular-season play next Tuesday afternoon at Eastern Wayne.

Spring Creek baseball 13, Mount Olive 2 -- Eric Evans threw a complete game and smacked a home run in a 4-for-4, five-RBI effort for the Gators. Hunter Newsome and Ethan Potter each provided two hits. Spring Creek (5-5, 4-2 WCMSAC Division II) entertains Rosewood next Monday afternoon.

Spring Creek softball 14, Mount Olive 7 -- Sarah McCullum banged out two doubles for the Gators, who improved to a school-best 9-1 overall. Elizabeth Wilkens contributed two hits.
