MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive third baseman Morgan Whaley has been named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Softball Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Whaley becomes the third Trojan overall this season and second in the last two weeks to earn CVAC softball player or pitcher of the week honors.
Whaley, a freshman from Beaulaville (East Duplin HS), had game-winning hits in two of Mount Olive's three wins over the weekend, including a tie-breaking leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning in the Trojans' 3-2 win Sunday over Belmont Abbey. The home run was Whaley's second of the year, both in conference play. Her game-winning homer came just after Belmont Abbey had tied the game in the top half of the inning.
Whaley also clinched a run-rule victory over St. Andrews Saturday, connecting on a walk-off bases-loaded two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to secure the Trojans' 9-1 victory. She went 2-for-4 in the game with three runs batted in.
Along with Whaley, Colleen Thomas won CVAC Player of the Week honors the first week of the season, while Christine Ermer was named last week's CVAC Pitcher of the Week.
Mount Olive (19-20 overall, 3-9 CVAC) returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Salisbury to take on Catawba in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 2 p.m.
