Chargers' Herring solid in relief effort against Wayne Christian

Kevin Herring provided six innings of two-hit relief and Wayne Country Day handed county rival Wayne Christian an 8-1 defeat on Saturday afternoon.

A sophomore right-hander, Herring collected four strikeouts and yielded an earned run in the third inning. Herring, who threw just 54 pitches, replaced starter Travis Davis, who issued three first-inning walks.

"It was a big win against a cross-county rival," said WCDS coach Michael Taylor.

The Chargers' Sam Steed doubled and drove in two runs in a 2-for-4 outing. Davis added two hits and two RBI in four at-bats. Ryan Ford batted 2-for-3 with an RBI and Kyle Pender contributed two hits.

Joseph Cha and Trent Langston each drove in a run.

The Eagles' Andrew Bass provided an RBI single in the third.

"I am extremely proud of my guys defensively," said Taylor. "The last couple of weeks, we hadn't played good defense, but we came through and played errorless defense today.

"That's a plus."

Wayne Country Day (4-4) entertains Flora MacDonald Academy next Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles (4-2) return to action next Thursday at Cape Fear Christian.

Beamon, Sowers lead GC

WINTERVILLE -- Trey Beamon collected two RBI and Drew Sowers emerged the winning pitcher in Greene Central's 4-2, non-conference victory over South Central on Saturday afternoon.

Beamon ended the day 2-for-3 for the Rams, who improved to 5-3 overall. Sowers contributed one hit in two plate appearances.

Curtis Braswell batted 2-for-3 and Michael Speedy provided an RBI single.

Greene Central opens its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference schedule on the road next Friday at North Pitt.

Harmon tosses five-hitter

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Kyle Harmon hurled a complete-game five-hitter in a 9-0, non-conference victory over Midway on the Fred Bartholomew Athletic Complex diamond Friday evening.

Harmon (1-1) collected six strikeouts and yielded one walk in the seven-inning affair. Offensively, Harmon provided two hits, including a double, and an RBI in four plate appearances.

Daniel Gerrell ripped a three-run home run -- his only hit in four at-bats. Ryan Daughtry belted a solo home run and tripled in three plate appearances.

The Bulldogs open their Carolina 1-A Conference season at home Tuesday against Spring Creek.

Eagles finish week 2-1

Wayne Country Day snapped county rival Wayne Christian's modest, two-match win streak with a 4-0 victory Saturday afternoon.

"Our goalie (Shelle Anderson) did play good game and had some good saves," said Eagles coach Darrell Anderson.

Wayne Christian (2-3) started the week with a 2-0 win over Hobgood Academy. Brooke Norris and Kaitlyn Kosudo each tallied a goal in the Eagles' first win of the season.

Norris notched two goals in Wednesday's 4-1 victory over Community Christian in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play. Kosudo and Hannah Kayler each contributed one goal.

Saints claim ECC victory

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne seized two key doubles victories and nipped Wilson Beddingfield 5-4 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both schools on Thursday afternoon.

The top-seeded tandem of John Stedman-Andy Wice eased past the Bruins' Eduardo Picaro-Darren Gardner 8-5. The No. 2 duo of Jonathan Hartley-Preston Grantham stopped Justin Webb-Frankie Mata 8-3.

"It was a good way to start the conference," said Southern Wayne coach John Fonvielle, whose team picked up its third win in nine tries.

Hartley, a sophomore, dusted Gardner 6-1, 6-1 en route to his fourth consecutive singles victory. James Poandl, a freshman making his first-ever start, claimed a three-set win at the No. 6 slot.

Grantham turned back Mata 4-6, 6-2, 7-4 at No. 4 singles.

Southern Wayne returns three starters -- Hartley, Stedman and Graham Price -- off last year's team. Fonvielle said the team was also missing two starters due to injury.

The Saints are the guests of Kinston on Tuesday and return home Wednesday for a battle against archrival Eastern Wayne.

Corey Walker and Ben Evans each earned a singles win for the Golden Falcons. Walker-Cooper Johnson triumphed at No. 2 doubles.

The Golden Falcons (0-9, 0-1 ECC) travel to Wilson Hunt next Tuesday afternoon.

Warren leads Gators past SW

MOUNT OLIVE -- Steven Warren carded a 2-over-par 74 and propelled Spring Creek to a 322-360, non-conference victory over county rival Southern Wayne on Thursday afternoon.

Pat Wilkens complemented Warren's effort with an 18-hole score of 78. Dustin Wood and Daniel Chewning turned in identical rounds of 85 on the Southern Wayne Country Club layout.

Brad Davis paced the host Saints with an 83. Andy Moore contributed an 86. Kevin Kornegay and Jay Connelley completed Southern Wayne's four-player output with a 95 and 96, respectively.

Sixth-grader tosses 3-hitter

ROCKY MOUNT -- Sixth-grade right-hander Chandler Harrell tossed a complete-game three-hitter in Wayne Christian's 18-0, non-conference conquest of Rocky Mount Prep on Friday afternoon.

Harrell, in his first-ever career appearance, collected five strikeouts and walked three in the five-inning contest. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Offensively, the Eagles' Kyle Harrell (four RBI) hit for the cycle -- a single, double, triple and inside-the-park home run -- in four plate appearances. Harrell delivered two hits and two RBI in three at-bats.

Jordan Crouthamel contributed three hits and an RBI. Dominick Arthur batted 3-for-3 with an RBI. Bradley Yelverton turned in a 3-for-3, two-RBI outing. Ryan Cook and Chase Darden each posted two hits.

Wayne Christian (2-1) entertains Fayetteville Christian on Monday.

Golden Falcons now 9-1

PIKEVILLE -- Bryant Hill delivered the game-winning hit in the seventh inning and C.B. Aycock escaped D.H. Conley 6-5 in non-conference play Friday afternoon.

Jay Rose emerged the Golden Falcons' top batter with two hits.

Hill earned the pitching win in relief.

Rose and Jordan Carr each belted a home run in the Golden Falcons' 4-0 conquest of North Lenoir on Wednesday afternoon. Steven Strouse paced Aycock's offense with two hits.

Rose threw a complete-game four-hitter on the mound.
