Potter, Ramirez notch hat tricks for Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Anna Potter and Christina Ramirez each collected a hat trick (three goals) in Spring Creek's 7-1, non-conference victory over county rival Southern Wayne.

Gabrielle Vasquez provided one goal and an assist in the Gators' season-opening match.

Jacqueline Venegas scored Southern Wayne's lone goal.

The Saints, of the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference, entered the match on the heels of an 11-0 loss against Wilson Beddingfield the night before. Head coach Clifton Broadhurst praised the effort of goalie Michelle Joyner.

Spring Creek opens its Carolina 1-A Conference schedule next Monday at North Johnston. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. Meanwhile, Southern Wayne (0-4) is the guest of Kinston the same evening.

lead Wayne Christian

Matt Davis emerged medalist with a nine-hole round of 37 and sparked Wayne Christian to a 167-203 victory over Trinity Academy-Raleigh at Walnut Creek Country Club.

The Eagles (3-2) remained unbeaten in three Carolina Christian 1-A Conference matches, and play again next Monday afternoon at Smithfield-Selma.

Hayden Gardner complemented Davis with a 41. Clark Rose and Taylor Gardner rounded out Wayne Christian's four-player score with a 42 and 47, respectively.

Chad Smith and Eric Williams also participated in the match.

North Lenoir

nips Spring Creek

KINSTON -- Spring Creek's Stephen Warren and North Lenoir's Will Norville shared medalist honors with 18-hole rounds of 77 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at Falling Creek.

The Hawks prevailed 334-337 in the team portion.

Blair Cruz complemented Norville's effort with a 79. Teammates Logan O'Neal and Garrett Hill contributed scores of 85 and 93, respectively.

Dustin Wood emerged the Gators' next-lowest scorer (82) behind Warren. Pat Wilkens carded an 83, while Daniel Chewning posted a 95.

Rebels' Pridgen

throws no-hitter

NEWTON GROVE -- Jennifer Pridgen threw a no-hitter and notched in six strikeouts in North Duplin's 12-1, non-conference conquest of Hobbton on Thursday afternoon.

Brittany Carr homered and drove in two runs for the Rebels, who improved to 8-1 overall. Kristen Jones added two hits and an RBI.

Heather Hudson (RBI), Elizabeth Lane (RBI), Kayla Myers (RBI), Casey Pate (RBI) and Jenny Coley each contributed one hit. Jodie Williamson plated one run.

Julie Ivey scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Rebels' 5-4, non-conference win over Arendell-Parrott Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

Myers scattered five hits in a complete-game effort.

Williamson, Hudson, Pate and Jones each had an RBI for the Rebels.

North Duplin opens its Carolina 1-A Conference schedule at home next Tuesday against North Johnston.

WILSON -- Julia Lancaster recovered from a shaky start and threw a complete-game one-hitter in Charles B. Aycock's 4-1 conquest of previously-unbeaten Wilson Beddingfield on Thursday evening.

It was the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener for both teams.

Lancaster (3-2) walked six Bruin hitters, but posted eight strikeouts en route to her third complete game of the season.

"Julia was a little shaky to start with, but the longer she goes, the stronger she gets and she proved that tonight," said Aycock coach David West.

Brittani Edgerton, who has signed with Pitt Community College, slapped a solo home run in the sixth inning and finished the night 3-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

"She hit it just about as hard you could hit it to straightaway center field," said West. "It had some distance."

Kandace Burroughs and Jazzmine Lee, who doubled, each collected two hits. Chelsey Byers provided a two-RBI double in the fourth inning. Emily Jordan and Shelly Lancaster each contributed one hit.

Ana Cooke endured the mound loss for the Bruins, who suffered their first loss in nine outings.

C.B. Aycock (4-5, 1-0 ECC) entertains Kinston next Tuesday afternoon.

LaGRANGE -- Kayla Sutton tripled and ended the day with three hits in North Duplin's 8-3, non-conference victory over East Duplin on Thursday afternoon.

Lauren Hudson added two hits, including a double, and two RBI. Brittany Sanders batted 1-for-4 with two RBI.

Conner Jordan scattered four hits and recorded seven strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Conquerors pick

up NCCSA victory

HOOKERTON -- Jennifer Christopher yielded one hit in Faith Christian's 11-0 victory over Mt. Calvary on the N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A Region scene Thursday afternoon.

Christopher collected eight strikeouts in the contest, which was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule. A right-handed hurler, Christopher has recorded 23 strikeouts in two starts on the mound.

Holly Dawson singled and doubled for the Conquerors.

Faith Christian (2-0, 2-0 NCCSA 2-A) is the guest of Berean Baptist Academy next Monday.

Eagles pound

Community Christian

Brittany Sullivan belted a grand slam and Traci Davis provided two extra-base hits in Wayne Christian's 19-3 throttling of Community Christian in Carolina Christian 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Sullivan smacked the round-tripper during the first two innings as the Eagles racked up 18 runs. Davis doubled and tripled, and Reagan Hinton rapped a double during the offensive onslaught.

"Everyone in the lineup hit the ball," said Eagles coach Roger Longwell.

Davis retired six of nine batters she faced by strikeout in the first three innings. Sullivan and Kayla Kennedy each threw one inning.

The contest was called after 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Wayne Christian (6-0, 3-0 CCC) visits Cape Fear Christian next Tuesday.

pops Jaguars

SNOW HILL -- North Lenoir prevailed in five of six singles matches and turned back Farmville Central 6-3 on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Thursday afternoon.

It was the Eastern Plains 2-A opener for both teams.

"The team played extremely well in singles today," said second-year Hawks coach Courtney Harrell.

Top-seeded Alex Mills, Steven O'Dell, Clinton O'Dell, Taylor Holmes and Steven Warren each collected a straight-set singles win.

Clinton O'Dell-Holmes picked up the Hawks' lone doubles victory.

TARBORO -- Greene Central opened defense of its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season title with a 7-2 victory over Tarboro High on Thursday afternoon.

The Rams improved to 6-3 overall, while the host Vikings fell to 8-3.

Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo, Bryan Pollock, Trey Cash and James Kersey each picked up a singles win. Kersey survived a second-set loss to turn back Tarboro's Chris Vick 6-2, 6-7 (6), 6-1.

Moore-Pollock and Nimmo-Andrew Harrison each prevailed in doubles.

WILSON -- Grant Sasser surrendered four hits in a complete-game performance as C.B. Aycock shut out Wilson Beddingfield 5-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

Sasser fanned 12 Bruins and remained unbeaten in four outings.

"Beddingfield has always given us fits," said veteran Aycock coach Charles Davis. "We got a great pitching performance from Grant. He looked very good on the mound."

Joseph Toler emerged the Golden Falcons' offensive leader with two hits in three at-bats. The junior second baseman provided an RBI single in the first inning and scored on Bradley Taylor's RBI double in the fifth.

"Toler has been a sparkplug for us all year long," said Davis.

Taylor ended the day 2-for-4 with an RBI. Bennett Jeffreys doubled in three plate appearances, while Thomas Pilkington rapped a two-RBI single in the seventh inning.

Jeffrey Barfield contributed two hits for the Eagles, who survived seven errors on defense and remained unbeaten in three CCC outings.

Adam Brannan fanned 11 Cyclone batters and surrendered six runs (two earned) on seven hits in five innings on the mound. Jeremy Jefferson provided two innings of no-hit, two-strikeout relief.

BEULAVILLE -- Sthil Sowers delivered three hits and plated three runs in North Lenoir's 13-0, non-conference decision against East Duplin on Thursday afternoon.

Bryce Grady slapped a first-inning grand slam for the Hawks, the reigning N.C. High School Athletic Association 2-A state champions. Brandon Sutton and Alex McGaughy each contributed two hits.

Sutton registered 11 strikeouts and limited East Duplin to one hit.

The contest was halted after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

suffers defeat

HOOKERTON -- John Spencer's two-run home run wasn't enough for Faith Christian, which endured a 5-2 defeat at Mt. Calvary on Thursday afternoon.

Josh Brannan added two hits for the Conquerors, who dipped to 2-2 overall and 2-2 against N.C. Christian Schools Association Coastal 2-A Region opponents.

Jay Hinson took the mound loss in relief of starter T.J. Sasser. Sasser struck out three and surrendered two runs (one earned) on two hits. Hinson posted six strikeouts in a four-inning stint, but allowed three unearned runs on two hits.

Faith Christian entertains Berean Baptist Academy on Monday.

Rock Bennett, Wade Sasser, Robert McCullen, Trea Beavers and Ryan Smith each had one hit in two at-bats for the Rebels.

Bennett suffered the mound loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on two hits and one walk in three innings of work. McCullen and Will Lewis combined for one inning of three-hit relief before the Wildcats plated the game-ending run in the fifth.

Officials stopped the contest due to the 10-run mercy rule at that point.

Bennett provided two hits, including a double, and two RBI in a 10-5, non-conference loss Wednesday afternoon against Sampson Union.

Wade Sasser added a double and two RBI for North Duplin.

Doug Lloyd endured the loss on the mound for the Rebels, yielding five runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout in two innings of work.

Warrior teams

take ECC meet

Eastern Wayne's boys and girls track teams emerged with wins in a three-team, non-conference meet contested Wednesday afternoon at Little Big Horn.

The Warriors' boys, behind nine first-place finishes, finished with 89 team points, followed by Charles B. Aycock with 76. Kinston rounded out the team scoring with 15.

Kendrick Best emerged with wins in the high jump and 100 meters for the Warriors, while teammate Stacey Edwards took the 300 hurdles and 110 hurdles.

Matt Interrante (3200) and Tim Wright (1600) also claimed individual wins for Eastern Wayne, which also won the 400- and 1,600-meter relays.

Aycock got individual wins from; Justin Pike (shot put), Khiry Reid (discus), Montez Ham (long jump), Spruce Lee (triple jump), Cameron George (pole vault), Daniel Pennington (400), Carson Sasser (800) and Cortez Gilbert (200). The Falcons also took the 3,200 and 800 relays.

In the girls meet, Eastern Wayne finished with 85 team points, while Aycock (42) and Kinston (35) rounded out the team scoring.

The Warriors swept all four relays, while Kihmair Lawson (shot put), Laniece Sims (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles), Quanica Allen (100), Noelle Kelly (400), Tiara Campbell (800) and Eugena Baker (200) claimed individual wins.

Eastern Wayne travels to Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday, while Aycock travels to Kinston.

Saints prevail

in ECC opener

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne erupted for five first-inning runs and cruised past archrival Eastern Wayne 9-2 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference opener for both teams.

Christina Williams doubled and singled twice for the Saints, who claimed just their second victory against seven defeats. Cassandra Jones singled and tripled, while Elizabeth Evans contributed one hit and three RBI.

April Tucker provided two singles.

Southern Wayne entertains North Johnston next Wednesday afternoon.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 11, Rosewood 1 -- Nick McGee provided three hits and five RBI for the Cobras. Tyler Ruffin added three hits, while Connor Narron contributed two hits and RBI. David Gurganus emerged the winning pitcher for Norwayne, which improved to 6-2 overall and 2-2 in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I play. The Cobras entertain Brogden next Monday afternoon.

Grantham baseball 3, Spring Creek 1 -- Steve Carlton batted 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI for the victorious Bulldogs. Will Broadwell added two hits and an RBI, while Dean Grady doubled in a 2-for-4 outing. Travis Weaver scattered three hits and notched two strikeouts in a three-inning stint. Broadwell provided four innings of seven-strikeout relief and earned the save. Grantham (3-3-1, 3-0 WCMSAC Division II) is the guest of Mount Olive next Monday.
