GREENVILLE -- Shane Mathews picked up his first win of the season helping East Carolina (16-6) to a series sweep over Marist on Sunday in a 5-2 victory at Clark-LeClair Stadium.
For Matthews, it was his first win since June 5, 2004 when he pitched eight innings against Stony Brook in the Kinston Regional. On the afternoon, he allowed one run on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in 51/3 innings.
Bryan Towler's two-out single in the top of the first scored Travis Musolf to give Marist (4-10) an early 1-0 lead. Musolf set up the run with a base-hit to left field, then stole second base and moved over to third on Jake Smith's throwing error on the stolen base attempt.
Smith collected his 30th RBI of the season on a ground out to short that scored Jay Mattox. Mattox lead off the inning with a triple down the right field line.
Sophomore Jamie Ray drove in the Pirates second run of the day in the bottom of the second with a double to left-center platting Jake Dean from first. Ryan Wood kept the inning going with a bunt single putting runners on the corners with one out. Mattox's fly ball to right-center scored Ray pushing the score to 3-1 after two full frames.
Wood collected his second hit of the day and his first career RBI in the bottom of the fourth when he doubled down the left field line scoring Ray to put the Pirates up 4-1.
In the bottom of the eighth Dean smacked his first home run as a Pirate, a solo shot to right field, extending the lead to 5-1.
Marist plated their second run of the game in the top of the ninth on Justin Lepore's inside the park home run to left-center off Josh Dowdy making the final score 5-2.
Scott Andrews came in to relieve Mathews in the top of the sixth throwing 22/3 innings of shutout ball in his seventh appearance of the season. Dowdy closed out the game pitching the top of the ninth allowing one run and striking out two.
