Trojan volleyball team prepares for three home matches this week

The Mount Olive men's volleyball team might have an idea what it's like to be a rock band on tour. The next stop for the Trojans on their 2006 Spring "At The Net" Tour is Kornegay Arena -- for one week only.

Mount Olive plays the first of its three home matches of the 2006 season tonight as the Trojans play host to Endicott (Mass.) in men's volleyball at Kornegay Arena. Match time is 7 p.m.

Mount Olive (4-6) began its season in mid-January and has played all of its first 10 matches on the road. The Trojans just finished a three-day/four-match swing through New York and Pennsylvania, posting a 2-2 record.

The Trojans began their most recent road trip Thursday with a 30-18, 30-17, 30-20 victory over York College in Jamaica, N.Y. The team stayed in Jamaica to play a pair of matches in the York College Tournament, defeating Lasell (Mass.) 30-25, 27-30, 28-30, 30-12, 15-10 and falling to Puerto Rico-Rio Piedras 30-21, 30-21, 30-20.

Freshman Pedro Penate led Mount Olive in the win against Lasell with 20 kills and 14 digs. Penate was one of four Trojans to reach double figures in kills in the match.

Mount Olive closed out the trip in Loretto, Pa., with a 30-19, 30-27, 30-21 loss at Division I St. Francis. Penate and junior Julio Arnaiz recorded 10 kills apiece. Arnaiz finished with a .471 hitting percentage.

For the season, Penate leads the Trojans with 4.00 kills per game this season, followed by Arnaiz at 3.39. Junior setter Zach Wilson, who recorded 65 assists in the win over Lasell, is averaging 11.13 assists per game this season.

Defensively, sophomore Kris Suarez leads the Trojans with 2.74 digs per game, while freshman Kyle Lewis leads Mount Olive with 0.96 blocks per game.

For Lewis, Penate and fellow freshmen Mike Carroll, Chris Schortgen and Caesar Trigo de Serrano, tonight's contest marks their first career home match.

Along with stops in Jamaica and Loretto, the Trojans have paid visits to Buffalo, N.Y., East Stroudsburg, Pa., Harrisonburg, Va., Newark, N.J., and Springfield, Mass.

Mount Olive plays all of its home matches this week as the Trojans play host to Eastern Mennonite (Va.) Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Trojans conclude their homestand Friday at 7 p.m. against rival Lees-McRae.

Mount Olive fell to nationally-ranked Francis Marion by identical 8-1 scores in non-conference NCAA Division II men's and women's tennis Sunday at Walker Tennis Center.

In men's tennis, four of the six singles matches either went three sets or were decided by a 10-point tie-breaker. Efrain Cayama picked up a win in a tie-breaker at No. 4 singles. Francis Marion is ranked No. 16 in the ITA Division II Men's Tennis National Poll.

Mount Olive falls to 5-11, while Francis Marion improves to 10-1. All of the Trojans' losses this season have come either to Division I teams or nationally-ranked Division II opponents.

On the women's side, Lucia Henkle rallied from one set down at No. 1 singles, winning 16-14 in the tie-breaker to pull out the victory. FMU is ranked No. 13 in the ITA Division II Women's Tennis National Poll.

Mount Olive falls to 6-6, while Francis Marion ups its record to 8-4.

Mount Olive men's tennis plays host to Division I Drake Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Walker Tennis Center. Both the Mount Olive men's and women's teams head to Wilson, N.C., next weekend to compete in the annual North/South Duals.

Francis Marion plays host to Lincoln Memorial Wednesday at 2 p.m. in non-conference men's and women's tennis.

Softball team

goes 0-4

The Mount Olive softball team posted an 0-4 record, all in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play, during its swing through Upstate South Carolina over the weekend.

The Trojans lost a pair of one-run games at Erskine Saturday, falling 7-6 in game one and 3-2 in game two. Mount Olive was swept by Anderson Sunday, falling 12-4 and 9-4.

The losses drop Mount Olive to 16-19 overall and 0-8 in the CVAC.

Mount Olive is off until this weekend as the Trojans play host to a pair of CVAC doubleheaders. Mount Olive entertains Belmont Abbey Friday at 4 p.m., then plays host to St. Andrews Saturday at 2 p.m. at Nancy Chapman Cassell Field.
