Katko notches four goals in Aycock soccer victory

PIKEVILLE -- Rebecca Katko notched a hat trick-plus-one (four goals) in Charles B. Aycock's 8-0, non-conference throttling of South Central on Thursday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons claimed their first win in six outings.

Amanda Schleppi, Melina Gibson, Danielle Sealy and Erin Medford each collected a goal for Aycock.

Keeper Patrice Pittman earned the shutout in goal.

Aycock (1-5) opens its Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference schedule next Monday afternoon at Wilson Beddingfield.

Brannan, Thomas

lead W. Christian

Wayne Christian pitchers Adam Brannan and Tyler Thomas combined for eight strikeouts in a 12-6, non-conference victory over Bethel Christian of Kinston on Thursday afternoon.

Brannan collected six strikeouts and yielded four runs in a five-inning stint. Thomas provided two innings of two-strikeout, two-run relief.

Thomas (three RBI) and Smith (two RBI) emerged the offensive leaders with two hits each. Brannan also drove in two runs.

Wayne Christian (2-0) is the guest Carolina Christian 1-A Conference foe Norlina this afternoon.

N. Duplin slips

past Hobbton

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Rock Bennett and Doug Lloyd each delivered an RBI single during a third-inning uprising as the Rebels nipped Hobbton 5-4 on Thursday afternoon.

Trailing 2-0, the Rebels capitalized on four consecutive walks from Wildcat starter Jason Warren and reliever Ross Thornton. North Duplin plated two runs on sacrifice flies and pushed three more across on singles from Bennett and Lloyd.

"We were able to get some hits and move some guys," said Rebels coach John Avent.

Bennett and Lloyd also factored into the pitching decision. Bennett yielded three runs (two earned) on three hits in a three-inning stint, and claimed the win. Lloyd threw four innings and recorded eight strikeouts en route to the save.

North Duplin (4-2) entertains Union next Tuesday afternoon.

Rams capture

three-team meet

MACCLESFIELD -- Greene Central's Colby Murphy earned medalist honors with an even-par 72 in a three-team, non-conference meet contested Thursday afternoon at Maccripine Country Club.

Murphy edged SouthWest Edgecombe standout Spence Fulford, a returning state qualifier, by two strokes in individual play. The Rams also edged the host Cougars 313-315 in the overall team score. Beddingfield was a distant third at 400.

Brandon Jones and Josh Elmore each complemented Murphy's effort with 18-hole scores of 80. Blake Sutton carded an 81.

Ryan Pittman led Beddingfield with an 88.

Greene Central (7-4) opens its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference schedule Monday afternoon at Farmville Central Country Club.

finish third at JHR

GREENVILLE -- Yasmine Washington picked up Eastern Wayne's lone individual event win during Thursday's non-conference, three-team meet contest at J.H. Rose.

Washington captured the long jump with a mark of 13 feet, six inches. The Warriors finished third overall with 38.5 points. The host Rampants amassed 96.5 points, while West Carteret racked up 40 points.

Eastern Wayne finished second in the 800, 400 and 1,600 relays. All three relays have qualified for the N.C. High School Athletic Association 3-A eastern regionals.

The Warriors return to action next Tuesday at home against C.B. Aycock and Kinston.

pound Bethel

Traci Davis threw a complete-game one-hitter as Wayne Christian hammered Bethel Christian of Kinston 11-1 in non-conference play Thursday afternoon.

The contest was called after five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Davis notched nine strikeouts and yielded an unearned run for the Eagles, who remained unbeaten in four outings.

Wayne Christian erupted for four runs in the opening inning and never looked back. Kayla Kennedy ripped an inside-the-park home run. Davis and Brittany Sullivan smacked back-to-back triples, and Reagan Hinton belted an inside-the-park home run.

The Eagles plated three runs in the third, two in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Wayne Christian travels to Norlina today.

Rebels shut

out Hobbton

CALYPSO -- Elizabeth Lane and Kristen Jones combined three RBI in North Duplin's 8-0, non-conference victory over Hobbton on Thursday afternoon.

Lane ended the day 2-for-4 with an RBI. Jones registered two hits, including a double, and two RBI.

Jodie Williamson, Brittany Carr (RBI), Kayla Myers and Casey Pate each contributed in the win.

Jessica Pridgen scattered two hits and struck out nine Wildcat batters in a complete-game effort.

North Duplin entertains Union next Tuesday afternoon.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Lynn Grantham had four hits, including a double, with three RBI and scored three runs in the Saints' 14-4 win at home over East Duplin on Wednesday.

The game was called due to the 10-run, mercy rule after Southern Wayne (4-4) scored two in the bottom of the sixth.

Alyssa Bradshaw added four hits for the Saints and scored three runs, while Lauren Darden had three RBI and Haley Fail drove in two.

Darden also picked up the win on the mound -- striking out 12 against no walks and giving up four runs (two earned) on five hits.

Paten Carlton had three hits for the Panthers, while Jessica Thigpen endured the loss on the mound.

Southern Wayne returns to action today at home against North Lenoir at 4:30 p.m.

pair of victories

Wayne Country Day remained unbeaten in four outings with a 9-0, non-conference conquest of county rival Wayne Christian on the Wayne Community College courts Thursday afternoon.

Ross Wilson, David Wilson, Byron Bryan, George Mayo, Luxman Srikantha and Fred Ha each seized a pro-set (eight-game) victory in singles.

Wilson-Bryan, Mayo-Tanner Pate and Kevin Martell-Albert Cho each emerged victorious in doubles.

Under windy conditions, Wayne Country Day defeated TEACH 6-3 on Wednesday afternoon.

Ross Wilson, David Wilson, Bryan, Mayo and Fred helped he Chargers take five of six singles matches. Sam Rouse claimed the lone win for TEACH. in singles.

TEACH took two matches as the combinations of Jonathan Stutts-Matthew Rouse and Sam Rouse-Eric Simmons emerged with wins in doubles. Mayo and Ha teamed to win at No. 3 doubles for WCDS.

solid road win

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne dominated doubles play and claimed a 7-2, non-conference victory over Wilson Fike on Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors' top-seeded tandem of Drew Ziccardi-Jared Stone breezed to an 8-1 decision over Griffin Benton-Matthew Fleck. The No. 2 doubles of Drew Jackson-Alex Bryant escaped Chris and Josh Forsythe 9-8, which included a 7-2 tiebreaker. The No. 3 team of David Benton-Eric Barnes ripped Carey Banks-Chris Green 8-1.

Ziccardi, Jackson, Stone and Benton each prevailed in singles.

Eastern Wayne opens its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference slate next Tuesday afternoon at Southern Wayne.

Rosewood emerged with wins in four of six singles matches and claimed a 5-3 victory over East Duplin at home on Wednesday.

Daniel Ellis, Drew Kriger, Josh Fail and Trevor Morris picked up wins in singles for the Eagles, who improved to 6-1 on the season.

The doubles combination of James Cummins-Kriger won at No. 2 singles for Rosewood. No. 3 doubles was not contested.

The Eagles hosted Greene Central on Thursday.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central recorded its second consecutive shutout in a 24-hour span with a 9-0, non-conference decision over Rosewood on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts Thursday afternoon.

Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo, Bryan Pollock, Spencer Dail, Trey Cash and James Kersey each picked up a straight-set singles win. Moore-Nimmo, Pollock-Cash and Dail-Andrew Harrison each won in doubles.

The Rams dominated Wilson Hunt 9-0 on Wednesday.

Moore, Nimmo, Pollock, Dail, Cash and Kersey helped the Rams take all six singles matches. Moore-Nimmo, Pollock-Cash, Kersey-Andrew Harrison finished off the sweep in doubles.

Greene Central (4-3) opens defense of its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season title next Tuesday afternoon at Farmville Central.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Taylor Reaves and Kristin Bova had two hits and one RBI each in the Saints' 9-7 win at home over East Duplin on Wednesday.

The win was Southern Wayne's first of the year as it improved to 1-5.

Katlyn Thornton added two singles for the Saints, while Elizabeth Evans had one hit and drove in one run.

Bova picked up the win on the mound for Southern Wayne, yielding seven runs (five earned) on 12 hits with five walks and three strikeouts.

The Saints travel to Southern Nash this afternoon.

Middle schools

Grantham baseball 1, Goldsboro 0 -- Steve Carlton emerged the Bulldogs' offensive leader with three hits in four at-bats. Carlton and Will Bunch combined for eight strikeouts on the mound. Grantham (2-2-1) remained unbeaten at 2-0 against WCMSAC Division II opposition.

Eastern Wayne 8 baseball, Norwayne 6 (8 inn.) -- Zachary Beachem led the unbeaten Warriors with three hits. Johnathan Carter, Johnathan Jenkins and Lamar Best each provided two hits. Josh Frederick and Jose Ponce combined for the pitching win. Eastern Wayne (5-0, 1-0 WCMSAC Division I) entertains Rosewood next Monday afternoon.

Brogden baseball 11, Mount Olive 2 -- Dylan Moody threw a complete-game one-hitter and collected 10 strikeouts. Nick Hatem led the Rams with three hits in four at-bats. Jesus Sandoval doubled twice in four plate appearances. Jabari Dos Santos added a double. Brogden (2-2) travels to Greenwood next Monday.
