Ermer tosses perfect game against Fayetteville State

FAYETTEVILLE -- Freshman Christine Ermer tossed her first collegiate perfect game as Mount Olive completed a doubleheader sweep over Fayetteville State with an 8-0 victory in game two Thursday. Ermer retired all 15 batters she faced in the five-inning run-rule win.

The Trojans defeated Fayetteville State 11-3 in game one as leadoff batter Tiffanie Pittman had a career-high four runs batted in.

Ermer (2-3) actually began her "perfect" day in game one, pitching the fifth inning in relief and striking out the side. She recorded three strikeouts in game two and allowed only one ball hit out of the infield, a second-inning fly out to right field.

Ermer completed her perfect game with a come-backer to the mound for the final out.

Both Ermer and game one starter Krystal Bourne got plenty of run support from the Trojans. Georgette Richardson gave Mount Olive an early 2-0 lead in game one with a two-run single in the first inning.

Mount Olive (16-15) broke the game open with a five-run second inning as the 7-8-9 batters in the lineup loaded the bases with nobody out and Pittman cleared the bases with a double. Melissa Bright and Richardson added RBI doubles in the inning.

After the Trojans added a run in the top of the third, Fayetteville State (0-4) capitalized on two errors to score three unearned runs in the bottom half to pull within 8-3.

The Trojans added two runs in the top of the fourth as Rigil Gruca singled home a run and Pittman drew a walk with the bases load. Mount Olive sealed the run-rule victory on Gruca's RBI double in the top of the fifth.

Bourne (7-4) allowed five hits in four innings, striking out two and walking two.
