Eastern Wayne's Kyle Ham shot a 74 to take medalist honors as the Warriors claimed the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference's opening match on Monday at Southern Wayne Country Club.

The Warriors finished with a team score of 318, followed by Wilson Hunt at 329 and Charles B. Aycock at 337. The host Saints took fourth at 343, while Wilson Beddingfield (362) and Kinston (390) rounded out the team scoring.

Scott Boyette added an 80 for Eastern Wayne, while Nick Barrow and Carter Walchli each shot 82. Miles Perry (83) and Jamie Scott (86) also contributed to the scoring for the Warriors.

Aycock's Will Vinson notched a 79, good for a tie for third overall, as Austin Forrest (84), Michael Stevens (85), Jordan Elmore (89) and Reding Pittman (93) added to the Falcons' total.

Southern Wayne was led by Brad Davis (80) and Andy Moore (83). Casey Best (88), Jay Kornegay (92), Jay Connelley (93) and Kevin Kornegay (102) also participated for the Saints.

The next ECC match is scheduled for March 20 at Willow Springs in Wilson.

EW suffers

home loss

Eastern Wayne's Joey Moye had three hits, including a home run and a double, and two RBI as the Warriors suffered a 9-5 loss at home to Wilson Fike on Monday.

Taylor Sutton added a homer, while Tyler Ham drove in one run for Eastern Wayne (1-4), which hosts perennial 4-A power, Greenville Rose, on Wednesday.

The Golden Demons were aided by four Warrior errors on Monday, leading to five unearned runs. Moye suffered the loss for Eastern Wayne, yielding four runs (one earned) on four hits. Following one inning of relief by John Wooten, Michael Mintz came on to toss five innings -- giving up three runs on five hits with five strikeouts against one walk.

"We've given up a lot of unearned runs this year, but we're still trying to find that pitching that we need," Warriors' coach Jabo Fulghum said. "But, I think we've found one last night in Michael Mintz. He came in and threw the ball pretty good for us."

Michael Brown had four hits for Fike, while Herbie Nelson had two hits, including a home run, as Brad Skinner also had two hits and drove in two. Bentley Massey picked up the win in six innings of work for the Golden Demons.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Austin Hood had three hits, including two doubles and an RBI, as D.H. Conley claimed a 5-4 win over the Saints on Monday at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Conley, ranked 18th in the nation in the latest Baseball America poll, improved to 4-1. Southern Wayne fell to 2-3.

Willie Koernig, David Combs and Brady Wiggins had one RBI each for Southern Wayne.

Michael Taylor drove in four with two doubles to pace the Vikings at the plate.

T.J. Hinson (1-1) picked up the loss on the mound for the Saints -- yielding five runs on five hits with three walks and three strikeouts in five innings.

Alex White got the win for Conley, striking out nine against no walks with four runs allowed on six hits.

"We scrapped, showed a lot of heart and put the ball in play against a very good pitcher," Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee said. "We had some really good at-bats and made big plays defensively."

Southern Wayne hosts West Craven on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Rebels balanced

in win at Parrott

KINSTON -- Six different North Duplin hitters drove in runs as the Rebels cruised to a 14-3 win at Arendell Parrott Academy in six innings on Monday.

Elizabeth Lane led the way with two hits and five RBI, while Jessica Pridgen and Heather Hudson drove in two runs each.

Jodie Williamson, Kayla Myers and Kristen Jones added one RBI a piece.

Pridgen picked up the win on the mound, giving up just three runs on five hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Brittany Robinson led Parrott at the plate with two hits.

North Duplin (4-1) travels to Lakewood today.

Gators fall

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Cassie Webb had three hits and three RBI in the Rams' 13-7 win at home over Spring Creek on Monday.

Amber Morris and Stacy Wade had two his each for Greene Central, which improved to 3-2-1 overall.

Jessica Moore got the win for the Rams.

Spring Creek fell to 0-4 heading into Wednesday's contest at North Lenoir.

On Friday, the Gators suffered a 5-0 loss at Union.

Shanna Gooding, Lorenda Brogden, Paula Webber and Jordan Coor contributed hits for Spring Creek. Brogden picked up the loss on the mound, yielding just two hits with three strikeouts and no walks. The Gators committed seven errors in the non-conference defeat.

Hawks remain

unbeaten

LaGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Katie Maloney posted a hat-trick (three goals) as the Hawks claimed a 5-1 win at home over Charles B. Aycock on Monday.

Haley Bright and Lindsay Walton contributed one goal each for North Lenoir, which improved to 7-0 heading into today's match at Washington.

Febe Barraza had 14 saves in goal for North Lenoir.

Aycock returns to action on Thursday at home against South Central.

No further information was provided on Monday's match.

EW battles

in home loss

Eastern Wayne's Jared Stone and Drew Ziccardi claimed the Warriors' lone singles wins in a 5-4 loss at home to New Bern.

Trailing 4-2 going into doubles, Eastern Wayne bounced back to win at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as the combinations of Stone-Ziccardi and Drew Jackson-Alex Bryant helped the Warriors pull even at 4-4.

The Bears went on to claim No. 3 singles to seal their win.

Eastern Wayne travels to Wilson Fike on Thursday.

GREENVILLE -- Southern Wayne's Alex Aldridge had two hits, including a double, and one RBI as the Saints fell, 7-5 at D.H. Conley on Monday.

Scott Holloman had two hits and an RBI for Southern Wayne (1-3), while Jordan Hood had a double and drove in two runs.

Conley scored seven runs off only three hits as the Saints aided the Vikings with seven errors.

Middle schools

Norwayne softball 24, Mount Olive 0 -- Ashley Shingleton had four hits for the Cobras (5-0, 2-0), who captured their 100th straight win -- stretching over seven-plus seasons under head coach Dan Millard. Autumn Pittman added three hits and picked up the win on the mound, while Cara Frederick had two hits, including a home run. Victoria Benton also had two hits for Norwayne, which hosts Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Norwayne baseball 31, Mount Olive 0 -- Eric Dubose and Tyler Ruffin had three hits each for Norwayne. Jonathan Taylor, Phillip Kirby, Nick McGee and Connor Narron, who homered, had two hits apiece. Jordan Quinn was the winning pitcher for the Cobras. Norwayne (4-1, 1-1) hosts Eastern Wayne on Thursday.

Brogden baseball 14, Goldsboro 3 -- Nick Hatem yielded only one hit for Brogden with six strikeouts and helped his cause with two hits, including a triple. Jesus Sandoval also had two hits for the Rams (1-2, 0-1), while Stephen Evans contributed a double. Brogden hosts Mount Olive on Thursday.
