Lady Warriors pick of first win of season

PRINCETON -- Eastern Wayne's Emily Sasser had three hits, including a double, in the Warriors' 7-6 win at Princeton on Friday.

The victory was Eastern Wayne's first of the year as it improved to 1-5 heading into Monday's home game against Wilson Fike.

Jessica Black added two hits for the Warriors, while Casey Mitchell had a single and two RBI.

Carrie Adams picked up the win on the mound for Eastern Wayne. Only three of Adams' six runs allowed proved to be earned. One error cost the Warriors three runs in the bottom of the sixth, helping the Bulldogs tie the game at 6-6, before Eastern Wayne rallied to take the lead for good in the top of the seventh.

Haylee Wood paced Princeton at the pate with three hits, including a double.

Saints avenge

loss to Eagles

Brianna Lofton and Alyssa Bradshaw combined for five RBI in Southern Wayne's 13-7, non-conference victory over Rosewood on Thursday afternoon.

The Saints avenged a 2-0 loss to the Eagles on March 2.

Lofton concluded the day 3-for-3, including two doubles, with three RBI and four runs scored. Bradshaw also batted 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI.

Rachel Reynolds doubled in a 2-for-4, three-RBI outing. Lynn Grantham collected a double in a 2-for-5, two-RBI showing. Meredith Davis delivered an RBI double and Haley Fail contributed two hits, including a double.

Lauren Darden and Morgan Davis combined for a seven-hitter and five strikeouts on the mound. Darden worked five innings and surrendered one unearned run on two hits. Davis threw two innings and notched one strikeout.

Rosewood hurler Aubrey Reinhard was saddled with the loss, giving up five runs (four earned) on seven hits in three innings. Chandra Meadows finished the game, yielding eight earned runs on four walks and eight hits.

Reinhard led the Eagles offensively with two hits and an RBI. Courtney Hill and Kasey Grey each contributed an RBI.

Southern Wayne (3-3) travels to state-ranked and unbeaten D.H. Conley next Tuesday.

Rams claim

thriller at CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Greene Central's Cassie Webb struck out 11 Charles B. Aycock batters and provided the game-winning hit in the top of the eighth as the Rams claimed a 6-5 victory over the Golden Falcons on Friday.

Trailing 5-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Aycock rallied for three runs against Webb as Shelly Lancaster tripled with two outs to clear the bases -- sending the game into extra innings.

Facing the Falcons' Julia Lancaster, Webb answered with a big hit in the eighth, scoring Stacy Wade to make it 6-5.

Lancaster, despite yielding just one run in four innings of solid relief of work, picked up he hard-luck loss. Lancaster struck out five against two walks and yielded three hits. Emily Jordan started for Aycock and gave up five runs on seven hits with four walks and four strikeouts.

Webb got the win for the Rams, striking out 11 against two walks and yielded five runs on six hits.

Aycock (1-3) hosts North Johnston on Tuesday, while Greene Central (2-2-1) hosts Spring Creek on Monday.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin erupted for seven runs in the bottom of the first and cruised to a 14-2 win over Holly Ridge Dixon at home on Friday.

Jodie Williamson finished with three hits for the Rebels, while Brittany Carr, Heather Hudson and Elizabeth Lane had two hits and two RBI each.

Jessica Pridgen added a three-run double for North Duplin, which improved to 3-1.

Kayla Myers picked up the win -- yielding only three hits and two runs (none earned) in five innings of work.

The Rebels travel to Parrott Academy in Kinston on Monday.

Eagles win

second straight

Rosewood's Dustin Sittig and Taylor Allen combined to give up just five hits in a 5-3 win at home over Hobbton on Friday.

The win was the Eagles' second straight as they improved to 2-2 heading into Tuesday's contest at Midway.

Sittig picked up the win, striking out five against three walks and yielding two runs on three hits in 41/3 innings of work. Allen came on in relief and gave up just one run on two hits in the final 22/3 innings.

Sittig, Brantley Ellis and David Smeltzer paced Rosewood at the plate with two hits and one RBI each. Ellis and Smeltzer both doubled. The Eagles started the fourth inning with four-straight hits, leading to three runs.

Dustin Byron led the Wildcats with two doubles, while Ross Thornton went the distance and got the loss for Hobbton.

Goldsboro

Wayne Country Day's Trent Langston hit a grand slam home run as the Chargers defeated Goldsboro High, 24-6 on Friday at home in their season opener.

Travis Davis added four hits and four RBI for WCDS (1-0), while Kyle Pender had three hits and drove in three runs. Cory Roberts contributed two runs and an RBI for the Chargers as Ryan Ford drove home two.

Donta Love hit a grand slam -- his first career home run -- to key the Cougars' effort, while Cedric McClary added two hits for Goldsboro (0-4).

Langston picked up the win for the Chargers, yielding five runs on one hit in 22/3 innings of work. Ryan Ford pitched the final 21/3 for WCDS.

Cedric McClary got the loss for Goldsboro (0-4), which hosts the Chargers on Friday.

Wayne Country Day travels to Parrott Academy on Tuesday.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin scored six in the bottom of the third on its way to a 9-8 win at home over Holly Ridge Dixon on Friday.

North Duplin's Billy Mello and Doug Lloyd had two hits and one double and an RBI each. Wade Sasser, Robert McCullen and Ryan Smith had one RBI a piece for the Rebels in a balanced effort.

Rock Bennett got the win in relief for North Duplin, allowing no runs or hits in the top of the seventh.

The Rebels return to action on Tuesday at Lakewood.

RHS competes

at Farmville

FARMVILLE -- Rosewood's girls finished second overall, while the Eagles' boys finished fourth in a four-team meet at Farmville Central on Thursday.

The Jaguars won the girls event with a score of 77, followed closely by the Eagles with a score of 75. Pamlico (61) and Ayden-Grifton (56) rounded out the team scoring.

In the boys meet, the Chargers claimed first with a 91 as the Chargers finished second with 88. Pamlico (54) and Rosewood (38) finished third and fourth, respectively.

Sa'Coya Cox and Shanita Monroe paced the Lady Eagles with two, individual first-place finishes and one win with the 4x400 relay team. Cox took the shot put (30-6) and discus (98-11), while Monroe claimed the high jump (4-8) and 400 meters (1:07). Sherlita McFall added a win in the 100 meters (13:72) and also participated in the 4x400 relay.

Rosewood's Devon Bennett proved to be the Eagles' lone first-place winner in the boys meet as Bennett won the 100 meters (11:33). Bennett, along with Stephen McIntyre, Josh Myers and Anthony Olson participated in the winning, 4x200 relay team.

The Eagles return to action on Tuesday at the Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf.

EW takes third

in home meet

Eastern Wayne's boys track team emerged with first-place finishes in four events in a three-team meet at home on Thursday against Wilson Fike and Rocky Mount.

Jeremy Interrante (11.44.02) claimed the 3200 meters, while Michael Lawrence (2.10.83) took the 800 meters. In the high hump, the Warriors' Kendrick Best (5-8) emerged with a top finish as Michael Edwards (43.1) won the 300 hurdles.

Keyed by eight, first-place finishes, Fike claimed the meet with a team score of 82. Rocky Mount, which won six events, took second with 57 points, while the Warriors had 47 team points.

Eastern Wayne travels to Wilson Beddingfield to take on the Bruins and Charles B. Aycock on Monday.

Chargers get

season-opening win

Wayne Country Day swept the singles and doubles matches, and seized a season-opening 9-0 victory against Southern Wayne at Herman Park on a windy Thursday afternoon.

Ross Wilson, David Wilson, Byron Bryan, George Mayo, Luxman Srikantha and Fred Ho each earned a pro-set (eight-game) singles victory. The same six players accounted for the Chargers' doubles wins.

Wayne Country Day (1-0) is the guest of Southern Wayne next Monday afternoon.

NEW BERN -- Jared Stone and Drew Ziccardi emerged victorious in singles play as Eastern Wayne dropped a 7-2, non-conference decision at New Bern.

Stone, the No. 1 seed, turned back the Bears' Blake Clemmons 6-4, 7-5. Ziccardi blitzed John Chapman in the opening set and eventually prevailed 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot.

The Bears pulled out crucial tiebreakers at Nos. 2 and 4 singles, and No. 1 doubles.

Eastern Wayne (3-1) gets a rematch with the Bears next Monday afternoon. First serve is scheduled for 4 p.m. on the Wayne Community College Courts.

WILMINGTON -- Southern Wayne's Alex Aldridge and Robert Herring each had a double in the Saints' 7-5 loss at Wilmington Ashley on Friday.

Michael Douglas and Ricky Odden also had hits for the Saints.

Only two of Ashley's seven runs proved to be earned.
