Thibodeau notches hat trick and assist in Rosewood victory

WARSAW -- Erin Thibodeau collected a hat trick (three goals) and dished out an assist in Rosewood's 5-0, non-conference victory over James Kenan on Thursday evening.

Thibodeau tallied all three goals in the second half for the Eagles, who remained unbeaten in five outings. They return to action March 20 at Class 1-A Carolina Conference opponent North Johnston.

Stephanie Behrend added two second-goals and provided two assists. Mary Jo Moore recorded an assist.

Hannah Adams tallied the Tigers' lone goal in the opening half.

Hawks post

shutout at EW

Senior Katie Maloney tallied the game's lone goal in a 1-0, non-conference victory over Eastern Wayne at Little Big Horn on Thursday evening.

Maloney delivered a header into goal off a corner kick in the second half.

Febe Barazza earned the shutout in goal and recorded 11 saves.

North Lenoir (6-0) entertains C.B. Aycock next Monday.

Eastern Wayne fell to 0-5.

Rosewood nips

Farmville Central

FARMVILLE -- The No. 2 doubles of James Cummins-Drew Kriger seized an 8-1 win and lifted Rosewood to a 5-3, non-conference conquest of Farmville Central on Thursday afternoon.

Kriger remained unbeaten in five singles matches with a 6-2, 6-1 decision against the Jaguars' Nick Waller.

Ty Johnson, Daniel Ellis and Josh Fail also triumphed in singles. Johnson and Fail each needed three sets to turn back their respective opponents.

Rosewood (4-1) entertains Southern Wayne next Tuesday afternoon.

Farmville Central lost to eventual state runner-up Spring Creek in last year's N.C. High School Athletic Association 1-A eastern regional dual-team championship.

MOUNT OLIVE -- Kevin Kornegay carded a nine-hole round of 44 in Southern Wayne's season-opening 192-203 victory over Smithfield-Selma on a breezy Thursday afternoon.

Andy Moore complemented Kornegay with a round of 48. Jay Connelley and Brad Davis rounded out the Saints' scoring with marks of 49 and 51, respectively.

Southern Wayne (1-0) plays host to the first Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference match of the season Monday.

Jones leads

Rams on road

GREENVILLE -- Brandon Jones fired an 18-hole round of 86 and Greene Central finished second overall in a three-team, non-conference match Thursday afternoon at Brook Valley.

The Rams carded a four-player total of 362 and lost by nine strokes to meet host South Central. Farmville Central was a distant third at 438.

Colby Murphy provided an 89 for the Rams. Teammates Blake Sutton and Josh Elmore posted 18-hole scores of 89 and 98, respectively.

Greene Central (3-3) continues play next Monday afternoon against Spring Creek at Walnut Creek.

Warriors place

second at home

Eastern Wayne's Noelle Kelly prevailed in the 200- and 400-meter events and the Warriors finished second overall in a three-team, non-conference meet Thursday afternoon at Little Big Horn.

Rocky Mount Senior High, of the NEW 6 Athletic 3-A Conference, won the meet with 106 points. Eastern Wayne finished second with 49, while Wilson Fike recorded 22 points.

Kelly ran the 200 in 27.18 seconds and posted a time of 1:05 in the 400. She also ran the opening leg on the 400 and 800 relays, which each finished second.

Richelle Butler tossed the shot put with a meet-best 28 feet, seven inches.

The Warriors (5-1) begin their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule next Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Beddingfield.

Baseball

Bulldogs collect

pair of victories

WILSON -- Colin Parker and Zack Harmon combined for a four-hitter in Princeton's 17-4, non-conference victory over Greenfield School at historic Fleming Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

Parker (1-0) surrendered four runs (two earned) on four hits and struck out five Knight batters. Harmon provided one inning of shutout relief for the Bulldogs, who evened their record at 2-2.

Daniel Gerrell and Ryan Daughtry each batted 3-for-3 with two RBI apiece. Dustin Pate doubled in a 3-for-4, three-RBI outing.

Princeton plated 17 runs in the first three innings combined in a contest called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Gerrell smacked a two-run home run in the Bulldogs' 14-1, non-conference win over Goldsboro on Wednesday.

Christopher Hinton scattered four hits and posted nine strikeouts in a five-inning stint. The game was called after 41/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Cedric McClary and Donald Lewis had one hit each for Goldsboro, while Monquavis Edwards got the loss.

JV baseball

Rose doubles

twice for Aycock

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Jay Rose had three hits, including two doubles, in the Golden Falcons' 11-2 win at home over Clayton on Wednesday afternoon.

Will Edgerton added two hits and two RBI for Aycock, while Bryant Hill also had two hits.

Daniel Stancil picked up the win on the mound for the Falcons, yielding just two runs on one hit with eight strikeouts in five innings of work. Aycock's Jessie Randolph tossed two scoreless innings of relief.

The Falcons (3-1) host Greene Central today.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 15, Greenwood 1 -- David Gurganus turned in a three-hit performance and claimed the pitching win. Conner Narron added three hits, including a double and an RBI. Jonathan Taylor also provided three hits. Norwayne (3-1, 1-1 WCMSAC Division I) travels to Mount Olive next Monday.

Spring Creek softball 13, Mount Olive 10 -- Elizabeth Wilkens, Alyssa Potter and Stacy Lane emerged the offensive leaders for Spring Creek.

Spring Creek baseball 10, Mount Olive 2 -- Dontay Boseman and Jackson Keel each had three hits for the Gators. Tanner Smith and Ethan Potter each contributed two hits, while Eric Evans claimed the pitching win. Cody Davis recorded two hits for Mount Olive. Spring Creek (2-1) plays host to Eastern Wayne next Monday afternoon.
