CLAYTON -- Charles B. Aycock's Shelly Lancaster slugged her first career home run at the varsity level -- capping a four-run seventh inning in the Golden Falcons' 7-2 win at Clayton on Wednesday.

The win was the first of the season for the Golden Falcons (1-1), who also defeated the Comets in the Class 3-A eastern regional final last year at Walnut Creek.

Shelly Lancaster finished with two extra base hits and drove in three runs, while Kandace Burroughs added three hits, including two doubles, with 2 RBI. Rusti Talton and Emily Jordan also had two hits each with Talton driving in two.

Julia Lancaster turned in a solid, complete-game effort on the mound for Aycock -- striking out 10 against two walks and yielding just two runs (one earned) on seven hits.

Sarah Jackson picked up the loss for Clayton, yielding seven runs on nine hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.

Aycock will take on D.H. Conley at home today at 6 p.m. in the first home contest for the Falcons.

Hinson, SW blank Eagles

VANCEBORO -- Southern Wayne's T.J. Hinson turned in the first complete-game shutout of his career as the Saints claimed a 2-1 win at West Craven on Wednesday.

Hinson (1-0) struck out 10 against only one walk and yielded just two hits in seven innings of work as his defense turned in errorless play behind him.

David Combs paced Southern Wayne at the plate with a 5-for-5 effort with three doubles and six RBI. Combs capped a six-run, sixth inning with a two-run double as the Saints took an 8-0 lead.

Austin Hood added two hits, including a double, and two RBI for Southern Wayne (2-1). Garrett Barfield had two hits and Willie Koernig posted one hit -- each providing one RBI.

Billy Dudding got the loss in six innings of work for West Craven.

Alex Allinen and Alan Edwards got the lone hits for the Eagles.

Southern Wayne hosts Wilmington Ashley on Friday at 5 p.m.

Golden Falcons drill Clayton

CLAYTON -- Charles B. Aycock's Thomas Pilkington slugged a three-run home run -- one of five extra base hits by the Falcons in an 11-2 win at Clayton.

Jackson Massey added two hits, including a home run and a double, with two RBI, while Bennett Jeffreys slugged two doubles. Joseph Toler contributed two hits and an RBI for Aycock, which improved to 5-0 on the season.

Grant Sasser (2-0) picked up the win on the mound for the Falcons, striking out six against two walks. Sasser's only run allowed proved to be unearned as the left-hander yielded five hits in five innings. Aycock's K.C. Kartch went the final two innings.

Daniel Morzella paced the Comets at the plate with two hits.

The Golden Falcons travel to Greene Central on Friday at 4 p.m.

Gators fall on road

NEWTON GROVE -- Spring Creek's Michael Russell had two hits, including a solo home run, in the Gators' 13-2 loss at Hobbton on Wednesday.

After Spring Creek scored once in the top of the first, the Wildcats struck for 11 runs in the bottom of the inning, then scored two more in the third on their way to a five-inning win.

Jason Warren had three RBI to pace Hobbton's attack. Warren also picked up the win on the mound in five innings of work.

Ray Grady picked up the loss for the Gators.

Spring Creek returns to action on March 15 at home against North Lenoir.

Rams top Kinston

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Hunter Chase had three hits and two RBI in the Rams' 6-3 win on Wednesday at home over Kinston.

Drew Sowers added two hits and two RBI for the Rams (3-1), while Antonio Whitfield had two hits and an RBI.

Robert Tyndall picked up the win for Greene Central, yielding three hits and two runs with eight strikeouts in five innings of work.

The Rams host Charles B. Aycock at 4:30 p.m. on Friday.

Warriors claim ECC opener

Eastern Wayne's boys track team prevailed in eight events on Tuesday, claiming their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener over Southern Wayne and Kinston.

Eastern Wayne finished with 108 team points, while Southern Wayne (44) and Kinston (33) rounded out the team scoring.

Michael McCall (discus), Kendrick Best (high jump), Stefan Henshaw (pole vault), Stacey Edwards (110 hurdles, 3200 hurdles), Michael Lawrence (1600 meters) and Matt Interrante claimed individual wins for the Warriors, while the host team also won the 4x800 relay.

The Warriors host Wilson Fike and Rocky Mount on Thursday, while the Saints return to action on March 14 at Wilson Hunt.

Eagles tally road victory

DUDLEY -- Rosewood emerged with wins in four-of-six singles matches at Southern Wayne and claimed a 6-3 victory on Wednesday.

Ty Johnson, James Cummins, Daniel Ellis and Drew Kriger won in singles for the Eagles (3-1). Preston Grantham and Thomas Deaver claimed the lone singles wins for the Saints.

In doubles, Rosewood's combinations of Cummins-Kriger and Johnson-Ellis emerged with victories. Graham Price and Chris King picked up Southern Wayne's doubles win.

The Eagles travel to Farmville Central today, while the Saints travel to Wayne Country Day.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central collected its second consecutive victory with a 9-0 conquest of Charles B. Aycock on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts.

The Rams (2-1) dropped just three games in six singles matches combined; and just 12 overall on the afternoon.

Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo, Bryan Pollock, Spencer Dail, Trey Cash and James Kersey each captured a straight-set singles victory.

Moore-Nimmo, Pollock-Cash and Kersey-Andrew Harrison each triumphed in doubles.

RHS claims home win

Rosewood's Stephanie Behrend had four goals and one assist as the Eagles easily defeated Kinston, 10-1 on Wednesday.

Erin Thibodeau added three goals and two assists for the Eagles, while Mary Jo Moore scored twice and Chelsea Brown added one goal. Mary Catherine Hollowell added one assist for Rosewood (4-0).

Middle schools

Rosewood baseball 13, Norwayne 7 -- Dillon McLamb had three hits for Rosewood, while Matt Neal, Jonathan Franks and Scott Pate had two hits. Neal picked up the win for the Eagles (3-0, 1-0), striking out five and yielding eight hits and one walk in five innings of work. Rosewood travels to Brogden today.
