Vikings turn back Golden Falcons in regional 3-A softball battle

GREENVILLE -- Ashton Ventors provided the game-winning hit in the bottom of the 11th, lifting D.H. Conley to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over the Charles B. Aycock softball team Thursday afternoon.

The teams battled to a scoreless tie through 10 innings.

Senior Kandace Burroughs ripped a two-out RBI double to give Aycock a 1-0 lead in the top of the 11th. Burroughs plated Brittany Ford, who served as Emily Jordan's courtesy runner.

D.H. Conley answered with a pair of singles and loaded the bases on a walk by Jordan. Julia Lancaster threw one runner out at home on a fielder's choice play. Ventors followed with her game-winning, two-RBI single to give the Vikings their second win without a loss this season.

"It was a perfect hit into the right center-field gap," said Aycock coach David West. "There wasn't anything we could do about it."

Rusti Talton emerged the Golden Falcons' top batter with two hits in four plate appearances. Burroughs, Jordan, Shelly Lancaster and Jazzmine Lee each provided one hit.

Jordan endured the pitching loss, striking out eight and walking seven in a complete-game effort. D.H. Conley managed five hits and plated one earned run.

The Vikings' Suzanne Riggs claimed the mound win and recorded 13 strikeouts compared to two walks.

C.B. Aycock (0-1) continues play next Tuesday at Clayton in a rematch of last year's eastern regional final at Walnut Creek won by the Golden Falcons.

"I've been fielding a lot of questions since it's the post-Jenny (Jackson) era and I think last night we answered a lot of those questions positively for us," said West. "They sure played their hearts out. That was like a Raleigh (Walnut Creek) game."

Sanders gets

no-hitter at home

LaGRANGE -- Junior left-hander Brittany Sanders recorded eight strikeouts and threw a no-hitter as North Lenoir rolled past Eastern Wayne 10-0 on Thursday afternoon.

The contest was called after 41/2 innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Sanders also provided six RBI offensively on a home run and triple in four at-bats. Jessica Kennedy and Anna Kennedy added a triple and double, respectively.

North Lenoir (3-0) is the guest of East Duplin next Monday.

Bulldogs take

second on road

ROSEBORO -- Princeton's Gerrell Bogle emerged victorious in three individual events during a three-team, non-conference meet Thursday afternoon at Lakewood.

Bogle claimed the 200-meter dash in 24.25 seconds. He added first-place marks in the triple jump (38 feet, 8-1/2 inches) and long jump (19-1). The Bulldogs finished second with 40 points, while the host Leopards collected 99.

Eastern N.C. School for the Deaf ended up third with 35 points.

Chris Langdon took second in the 3,200 and third in the 1,600.

Princeton (1-1) returns to action next Thursday at SouthWest Edgecombe.

Rosewood splits

non-league meet

Rosewood's girls prevailed in a three-team, non-conference meet against Union and Pamlico County, while the Eagle boys claimed third on Thursday afternoon.

Sherlita McFall captured first place in two individual events for the Eagles, who posted 75 points. She turned in a time of 13.266 seconds in the 100 dash and returned later in the day to win the 200 in 28.56. McFall also participated on the winning 400- and 1,600-meter relay.

Jamie Andrews won the 1,600 in 7:27 and the 3,200 in 16:47.

Sa'Coya Cox grabbed a victory in the discus with a throw of 111 feet, five inches.

Pamlico took second with 45, followed by the Spartans with 41.

On the boys' side, Rosewood received individual wins from Jeremy Hill, Bradly Mullens and Chris Holmes. Hill won the shot put and finished fourth i the discus. Mullens placed first in the 400 and Holmes was the top triple jumper with a mark of 40-7.

Mullens finished second in the pole vault.

Pamlico recorded 81 points, compared to 61 for Union. The Eagles had 44.

It was Rosewood's season-opening meet.

KINSTON -- Josh Elmore carded an 18-hole round of 77 as Greene Central claimed third overall in a four-team, non-conference match Thursday afternoon at Falling Creek.

The Rams posted a four-player total of 335, one stroke behind runner-up East Duplin. Havelock, paced by medalist Luke Hunter (76) took first with 324. North Lenoir was fourth at 339.

Colby Murphy and Blake Sutton each complemented Elmore with scores of 85. Brandon Jones provided an 88.

Logan O'Neal emerged North Lenoir's low scorer with an 80.

Greene Central (1-2) faces SouthWest Edgecombe at Maccripine Country Club next Monday afternoon.

North Duplin

falls on road

HOLLY RIDGE -- Billy Mello and Robert McCullen provided just about all of North Duplin's offense in a 7-3, non-conference loss Thursday afternoon at Dixon.

Mello batted 2-for-4, while McCullen turned in a 2-for-3 effort. Doug Lloyd added one hit in three plate appearances.

Middle reliever Rock Bennett endured the pitching loss and yielded four runs (two earned) on five hits.

The Bulldogs' Jordan Davis picked up the pitching win. He provided three innings of three-hit, three-strikeout relief.

The Rebels (0-2) entertain Lakewood next Tuesday afternoon.

gets 3rd victory

BEULAVILLE -- Katie Maloney tallied two goals as unbeaten North Lenoir dumped East Duplin 4-1 on Thursday afternoon.

Haley Bright added one goal and an assist. Lindsay Walton contributed one goal, while Lauren Hudson collected an assist.

Febe Barazza recorded nine saves in goal.

North Lenoir (3-0) is the guest of archrival South Lenoir next Monday.

Warriors ease

past Wilson Fike

Eastern Wayne's No. 1 tandem of Jared Stone-Drew Ziccardi put the finishing touches on visiting Wilson Fike as twilight descended on the Wayne Community College courts Thursday evening.

Stone-Ziccardi doubled up Griffin Benton-Matthew Fleck 8-4 and lifted the Warriors to a 5-2, non-conference victory.

Stone, Ziccardi, Drew Jackson and David Benton each posted a win in singles. Benton needed three sets to turn back fourth-seeded Josh Forsythe 1-6, 7-6 (2), 8-6.

Fike claimed wins at Nos. 5 and 6 singles.

The Nos. 2 and 3 doubles were not completed due to darkness.

Eastern Wayne entertains North Lenoir next Tuesday afternoon.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central collected the necessary five singles victories and cruised past Rosewood 8-1 in non-conference action Thursday afternoon on the Snow Hill Tennis Complex courts.

Travis Moore, Banks Nimmo, Bryan Pollock, Trey Cash and James Kersey collected a straight-set singles victory. Nimoo, Pollock and Kersey each shut out their respective opponent.

Moore-Pollock, Nimmo-Andrew Harrison and Cash-Spencer Dail each prevailed in doubles.

Drew Kriger picked up Rosewood's lone win -- a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Dail at No. 4 singles.

Each team returns to action next Tuesday afternoon. Greene Central (1-1) entertains C.B. Aycock next Tuesday afternoon, while Rosewood plays host to East Duplin.

Greenwood (1-0) travels to Goldsboro on Monday, while Mount Olive (0-1) hosts Rosewood.

Grantham softball 9, Rosewood 4 -- Bulldog pitcher Carrie Martin yielded two hits and recorded nine strikeouts in a complete-game effort. Martin provided two hits offensively. Brittany Pate doubled in a 2-for-3 outing, while Erica Strickland contributed a two-RBI double. Grantham (1-0) entertains Eastern Wayne next Monday afternoon. Rosewood exited 0-1.
