MOUNT OLIVE -- Josh Carter's three-run homer capped a five-run sixth inning as Mount Olive came from behind to defeat Coker 8-3 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference baseball Sunday at Scarborough Field. The win gives Mount Olive a three-game sweep of the series and extends the Trojans' winning streak to six.
Mount Olive (12-3 overall, 4-2 CVAC) trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the sixth when Mike Kicia started the Trojans' rally with a two-out single to center. Leadoff batter David Cooper singled through the left side and both runners scored when Lance Martin's single to left was misplayed to give Mount Olive its first lead at 4-3.
After Stephen Nordan was hit by a pitch, Carter sent a 1-0 pitch over the left-centerfield fence to extend the Trojans' lead to 7-3. Anthony Williams added a bases-loaded single in the eighth to close the scoring.
Coker (6-6-1, 0-3) took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Brian Nally lined a two-run double to left with two outs in the inning. Nally drove in another run in the fourth when his ground ball to second was misplayed, scoring Mike Pitkewicz from third.
Jesse Lancaster (2-0) pitched four innings of relief to pick up the win. Lancaster, who entered the game for starter Paul Burrow to open the third inning, allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out five. Brett Williams and Daniel Wood combined for three scoreless innings of relief to seal the win. The Trojans held Coker to five hits.
Jesse Hatchell (0-1) took the loss for Coker in relief of starter Seth Weinburg, who had to leave the game in the third inning after getting hit in the ankle by Carter's hit up the middle.
Carter and Kicia had three hits apiece to pace Mount Olive's 16-hit attack.
Mount Olive returns to action Thursday as the Trojans travel to Elizabeth City to take on Elizabeth City State in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. The twinbill was originally scheduled for this past Wednesday, but was rescheduled due to rain. Coker travels to Raleigh on Tuesday to take on St. Augustine's in non-conference action.
