WCDS, Faith fall in playoffs

HIGH POINT -- Wayne Country Day's Tavon Waters and Adam Wright finished their careers in impressive fashion, but it wasn't enough as perennial-power, Gaston Day claimed a 78-60 win over the Chargers in the quarterfinals of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A playoffs at Wesleyan Academy on Thursday.

Waters poured in 26 points with six assists and four steals. Wright, an all-state performer, contributed a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds and also swiped four steals. Cameron Strickland chipped in five points for WCDS.

WCDS, the tournament's No. 6 seed, concluded its season at 20-11 under first-year coach Chad Wiggins.

Gaston Day (23-9), a team with three Division I signees, will move on to face Statesville Christian (22-12) in the semifinals.

"They (Gaston Day) were tough. They would send in a second unit, and they were just as strong," Wiggins said.

The Chargers fell behind 14-0 early in the game, but trimmed the deficit down to three in the second quarter. Gaston Day countered with a spurt to push the margin back up to 10, before pulling away in the second half.

Waters, Wright and Phillip Weeks played in their final basketball games for WCDS.

Cramerton tops

Conquerors

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian's T.J. Sasser scored 21 points and drilled four, 3-pointers as the Conquerors suffered a 74-70 loss against Cramerton Christian in the quarterfinals of the N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A state tournament on Thursday.

Foul trouble plagued Faith through the game as four players fouled out, and Cramerton made 16 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Aaron Sladick added 20 points, while Josh Brannan contributed 12 points for Faith, which finished an impressive season at 24-2.

John Boseman paced Cramerton with 24 points as teammate Justin Harper tallied 15 points.

FAYETTEVILLE -- Faith Christian's Elizabeth Clarke scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the Conquerors' 43-21 loss to Cramerton Christian in the quarterfinals of the N.C. Christian Schools Association 2-A state tournament on Thursday.

Faith trailed just 23-15 at the half but scored just six after intermission as Cramerton pulled away.

"We just went cold after halftime," Faith coach Eddie Smith said.

Natalie Thibeaux contributed five points and nine rebounds for the Conquerors (12-10), while Amie Hill had four points and Alyssa Hill added six rebounds.

Cramerton's Kelsey Barnes led all scorers with 23 points as teammate Rachel Duncan chipped in 10 points.
