Nordan, Martin, Wooten drill home runs for Trojans

MOUNT OLIVE -- Stephen Nordan and Lance Martin each belted a three-run homer and Graham Wooten added a solo home run to lead Mount Olive to a 10-3 victory over Shaw in non-conference NCAA II baseball Tuesday at Scarborough Field. The three players drove in nine of the Trojans' 10 runs.
Mount Olive (9-3) opened the scoring in the bottom of the second as Josh Carter led off with a single and scored on Wooten's two-out double. After an error and a walk put runners on first and second with one out in the third, Nordan connected on his first home run of the season to break a 1-1 tie and give the Trojans a 4-1 lead.
Wooten drew a walk to lead off the fourth and eventually scored on an error. Then with one out and two runners on base, Martin hit his first home run of the year to extend Mount Olive's lead to 8-1. Wooten belted a solo home run in the fifth, his second homer of the season.
Shaw (0-3) got on the scoreboard in the top of the third on Avery Bryant's RBI double before Mount Olive came back with eight unanswered runs. Mike Grant hit a solo home run for Shaw in the sixth inning.
Jesse Lancaster started the game for the Trojans, allowing one run on two hits and striking out five. Daniel Wood (1-1) pitched two innings of relief for the win, striking out three. Blake Montgomery and Brett Williams also combined on the six-hitter.
Starting pitcher Casey Welch took the loss for Shaw.
Mount Olive returns to action today as the Trojans travel to Elizabeth City to take on Elizabeth City State in a non-conference doubleheader. Game time is 1 p.m. Shaw travels to Denmark, S.C., today at 2 p.m. to take on Voorhees.
