Medeiros has career outing against Erskine

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Sierra Medeiros tallied career highs of 22 points and 13 rebounds to lead Mount Olive to a 77-64 victory over Erskine (S.C.) College in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon.

Teneal Boone added 11 points and 10 rebounds for her fifth consecutive double-double and her 13th of the season.

The Trojans have won three of their last four games.

Mount Olive (13-12 overall, 8-10 CVAC) rallied from an early 5-0 deficit as Tomeka Prichard scored the game's next five points, including a 3-pointer to extend her three-point streak to 13 consecutive games. After Erskine (14-11, 11-7) regained the lead, the Trojans scored seven unanswered points, capped by back-to-back baskets by Medeiros to give Mount Olive a 13-10 lead with 12:10 remaining in the first half.

The Trojans still held a three-point lead when Lisa Jackson keyed a 15-3 run for Erskine. Jackson converted a three-point play and connected on a 3-pointer as she scored 10 points during the run. Lauren Brendle's 3-pointer with 2:18 remaining gave Erskine its biggest lead of the half at 32-23.

A pair of free throws by Teneal Boone and a putback by Medeiros pulled the Trojans within five, but Brendle answered with another 3-pointer with 24 seconds remaining. Anita Rogers, who hit a 3-pointer earlier in the half, scored at the buzzer to pull Mount Olive within 35-29 at halftime.

Medeiros had 10 points at halftime for Mount Olive.

Erskine built the lead back to eight points on a pair of free throws by Melissa Woods only 10 seconds into the second half, but Boone scored on Mount Olive's next two possessions and Alisa Jones' basket off of Meaghan Vanderhorst's steal gave the Trojans a 40-39 lead with 16:05 left in the game.

The game was tied 45-45 when Keona Corley hit a field goal put Mount Olive ahead to stay and Vanderhorst capped a 13-2 run with a 3-pointer to give the Trojans their first double-digit lead at 58-47 with 7:26 remaining. Medeiros scored six points during the run.

Anita Owens hit a 3-pointer for Erskine to cut the lead to single digits, but Prichard answered with a three of her own to build the lead back to 11. Erskine never got closer than eight points the rest of the way and Trojans led by double figures for the final 3:31 of the game. Medeiros' basket with 1:46 remaining gave Mount Olive its biggest lead at 73-56.

Mount Olive hit 9-of-12 free throws in the final 2:30 of the game to seal the win. Bokeeter Mozee began the late-game free throw parade by hitting 1-of-2 free throws, rebounding her own missed shot, drawing another foul and sinking both free throws.

The Trojans overcame a 36.7 percent field goal shooting performance in the first half by hitting 58.6 percent (17-for-29) from the field in the second half.

Prichard finished with 14 points, five assists and two blocked shots, while Vanderhorst hit 3-of-6 3-pointers and added 13 points. Corley, who broke her own school single-game record with 12 assists Monday against Coker, dished out nine assists. Jones pulled down nine rebounds as the Trojans outrebounded Erskine 46-34.

Medeiros recorded her second collegiate double-double and eclipsed her previous single-game highs of 13 points and 11 rebounds, set January 16 against Belmont Abbey. Medeiros hit 11 of her first 12 field goal attempts and finished 11-for-13 from the field.
