Faith Christian boys claim NCCSA 2-A Coastal Regional tournament

Josh Brannan provided a double-double -- 12 points, 11 rebounds -- and Faith Christian Academy claimed the N.C. Christian Schools Association Class 2-A Coastal Regional title with a 72-49 conquest of Mt. Calvary-Hookerton.

The Conquerors (24-1) earned the No. 1 seed for next week's eight-team state tournament at Berean Baptist Academy in Fayetteville. Opening-round play begins Thursday.

Aaron Sladick emerged Faith Christian's leading scorer with a game-high 15 points. Taylor Stocks contributed 14, while T.J. Sasser pumped in nine.

Justin Kennedy led Mt. Calvary with 13 points.

Faith Christian advanced to the finals with a 60-37 victory over Trinity Christian-Greenville on Friday. The teams were tied at 15-15 after one quarter, but the Conquerors pulled comfortably ahead with a 20-2 outburst before halftime.

Johnathan Spencer led Faith Christian with 13 points, while Sasser recorded 11. Sladick collected nine points, while Ryan Reilly and Taylor Stocks each scored six.

clinches berth

Faith Christian earned a spot in next week's N.C. Christian Schools Association Class 2-A state tournament with a 1-1 split in this weekend's Coastal Regional contested on its home floor.

The Conquerors settled for the region's No. 2 seed after a 43-17 loss Saturday morning against Falls Road Baptist of Rocky Mount. The Crusaders limited the Conquerors to just six second-half points.

Elizabeth Clarke led Faith Christian's attack with 11 points. Natalie Thibeaux provided four points and seven rebounds. Amy Hill (seven rebounds) and Renee Provencal (four steals) played solid defensive games, according to head coach Eddie Smith.

Thibeaux posted a double-double -- 24 points, 10 rebounds -- in Faith Christian's 45-37 victory over Trinity Christian-Greenville on Friday. Clarke added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Alyssa Hill contributed five points and seven rebounds. Amy Hill turned in a four-point, eight-rebound effort. Provencal played a solid floor game with four assists and five steals.

Faith Christian (14-9) returns to action next Thursday in the eight-team state tournament at Berean Baptist Academy in Fayetteville.

Halifax ousts

W. Country Day

Wayne Country Day's Ashley Clark scored 15 points in the Lady Chargers' 55-37 loss to top-seed Halifax Academy in the semifinals of the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference tournament on Friday.

Molly Peacock added eight points for WCDS, which concluded the season at 5-17 overall.

The score was tight after one quarter with the Vikings clinging to an 8-7 lead against the No. 6 seed Chargers. But Halifax outscored the host team 20-9 in the second quarter to go up 28-16 at halftime.

"We didn't play good transition defense for a few minutes, but I was proud of us getting to the semifinals," second-year WCDS coach Toni Ingram said. "At least we were able to play at home, being that we were hosting."

Jody Williams contributed 16 points for the Vikings (20-3), while Kristin Haux and Sarah Long had 14 and 10 points, respectively.

Tiara Broadie, the Chargers' lone senior, played in her final basketball game at WCDS.

Ingram hopes the young team will make strides in the offseason to make them an improved squad heading into next season.

"I hope we can get in more summer play. We're hoping to attend a few camps," she said. "The bottom line is we need to start working on a different level all-around during the summer."

Halifax faced the winner of Faith Christian-Rocky Mount and Kerr-Vance in the championship game.

in CCC semifinals

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price had six points, four rebounds and four steals in the Lady Eagles' loss to Cape Fear Christian in the semifinals of the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament on Thursday.

The Eagles finished the season at 16-5 overall and won the regular-season title.

Hanna Kaler added four points, seven rebounds and four steals for WCS, while Shelle Anderson pulled down five boards.

pulls off upset

Kerr-Vance executed a slow-down tempo to perfection and upset top-seeded Wayne Country Day 26-25 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference tournament championship Saturday afternoon.

Kameron Byrd led the Chargers with 14 points. David Wilson and Kevin Martel each scored four points. Byrd and Wilson were selected for the CPIC all-conference team.

Wayne Country Day concluded the year 17-6.
