Trojan diamond 9 split CVAC twinbill with Pfeiffer

Ted Pelech and Donald Huff combined on a five-hit shutout to lead Mount Olive to a 2-0 victory over Pfeiffer in game one of a CVAC baseball doubleheader Wednesday at Misenheimer.
The Trojans had to settle for a split as Pfeiffer scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a passed ball for a 7-6 victory in game two. Pfeiffer won two-of-three in the conference-opening series.
Mount Olive (6-3 overall, 1-2 CVAC) broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third when Jesse Lancaster singled with one out, advanced to third on David Cooper's double and scored on Stephen Nordan's sacrifice fly.
The Trojans struck again in the fourth as Graham Wooten laced a one-out single, stole second and scored on Lance Martin's rbi-single.
Pelech (2-0) picked off a runner to escape a threat in the bottom of the first and was aided by double plays in the second and fourth innings. Pelech struck out three and allowed four hits in five innings pitched. Huff, who has retired 23 of 26 batters he has faced this season, allowed one hit in two innings pitched for his first save of the season.
In the second game, Mount Olive capitalized on a pair of Pfeiffer errors to build a 3-1 lead after three innings. Josh Carter singled home a run in the fifth and drove in a run on a sacrifice fly in the seventh to give the Trojans a 5-2 lead.
Pfeiffer (3-8, 2-1) scored a run in the bottom of the seventh and took its first lead of the game with three runs in the eighth, including a run on a passed ball on a strikeout.
The Trojans tied the game in the top of the ninth as Cooper drew a leadoff walk and eventually scored on Carter's sacrifice fly. Carter had three runs batted in and brought in two more runs when he reached on an error in the first inning.
Pfeiffer scored the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth a leadoff single, a ground out, a walk and a passed ball.
