WAVE 16s rally to win bronze medal

GREENSBORO -- Down 11-4 in the deciding match of the championship game, the local W.A.V.E. 16 Black travelling volleyball team battled back to claim the title of the Carolina Region Women's 16-under Bronze division with a 15-12 win at the Greensboro Sportsplex.

The tournament featured teams from across the state and the W.A.V.E team took home the gold medal of the tourney in the program's second year.

At a tournament held in Lexington, the local W.A.V.E. 16 Blue team went 2-1 in pool play, before falling in the championship game.

Kristin Smith and Caitlin Turner paced the attack of the 16 Blue team, while Kristin Jordan, Samantha Cates and Jamie DeRatt were praised for the work from the service line. Defensively, Brandi Simpkins, Kristin Smith, Ashley Shaw and Victoria Bedwell led the way.

"I'm extremely proud of this team. They showed a lot of heart and played with everything they had," coach Eric Durol said. "I'm confident we'll be in playoff contention at our next tournament, and that we will win."

The 16 Blue team travels to Misenheimer for a tournament on Saturday.

Chargers claim

CPIC victory

Kameron Byrd pumped in a game-high 24 points, leading Wayne Country Day past Halifax Academy 64-49 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference tournament semifinals on Thursday.

David Wilson complemented Byrd with 14 points. Ryan Ford and Brandon Davis provided eight and seven points, respectively.

The Chargers oppose Kerr-Vance in the tournament final at 4 p.m. Saturday.

CCC 1-A final

ERWIN -- Wayne Christian held Northwood Temple to just six field goals the entire game and rolled to a 41-15 victory in their Carolina Christian 1-A Conference semifinal contest on Thursday afternoon.

Eric Williams notched a double-double -- 16 points, 15 points -- to go along with three steals and three assists. Colton Woods contributed nie points and three steals. Brian Alexander chipped in seven points, four rebounds and three blocked shots.

Wayne Christian (14-6) faces Village Christian for the tournament championship on Saturday.
