MOUNT OLIVE -- Melvin Creddle scored all of his 15 points in the first half and senior Victor Young became the second Mount Olive player this season to reach 1,000 career points as regionally seventh-ranked Mount Olive College defeated Coker 77-57 in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's basketball game Monday evening at Kornegay Arena.

Mount Olive (18-5 overall, 12-4 CVAC) jumped out to a 9-2 lead as Creddle and Young combined for three three-pointers in the first two minutes of the game. Coker (5-18, 4-13) pulled within a point as Mark Duncan hit a pair of three-pointers to cut the lead to 11-10 with 14:49 left in the half. The Trojans then built the lead to double digits as Montel Jones' basket ignited a 9-0 run.

Coker drew as close as six points before three-pointers by Creddle and Chris Bartley extended Mount Olive's lead to 30-19 with 4:34 remaining. Coker cut the lead down to single digits again, but Maurice Horton's putback at the buzzer capped a 9-2 run and gave the Trojans a 41-26 lead at the break. Mount Olive would lead by double figures the rest of the way.

Elijah Rouse, who was held to two points in the first half, scored eight of Mount Olive's first 12 points in the second half. But Coker stayed within striking range as Duncan and Ryan Fullwood each hit a three-pointer and Abram Ludd sank a pair of free throws to pull the Cobras within 53-42 with 12:50 left in the game.

Mount Olive then broke the game open with a 9-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back three's by Justin Melton, as the Trojans took their biggest lead at 64-42 with 10:04 remaining. Coker never got closer than 17 points the rest of the way.

Young, a Goldsboro High graduate who entered the game with 993 career points, scored six points in the first half, but sat out nine straight minutes in the second half as the Trojans played their reserves with a 20-point lead. Young returned to the floor with just under five minutes left and reached the milestone with a pair of free throws with 1:29 remaining.
