MOUNT OLIVE -- For the second week in a row, Mount Olive narrowly missed breaking into the top 30, finishing in a tie at No. 31 this week in the Collegiate Baseball Division II Top 30 national poll, it was announced Monday. The Trojans came within four points of a top 30 ranking.

Mount Olive (5-1) opened the 2006 season with a four-game sweep over Newberry and split a doubleheader Sunday with Shippensburg, which slipped one spot to No. 30 in this week's poll. The Trojans received eight points in the poll and tied with Ouchita Baptist (Ark.)

Mount Olive is one of three Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference teams to receive votes in the poll, joining Coker and Erskine, which picked up one vote apiece.

The Trojans are looking for their first national top 30 ranking since finishing the 2004 season ranked No. 25. Mount Olive's highest-ever ranking is No. 3.

Central Oklahoma is ranked No. 1, followed by Catawba and Georgia College and State tied at No. 2. The Trojans play host to Catawba in April. Catawba and Shippensburg are among four current top 30 teams Mount Olive will face this year, joining Armstrong Atlantic State (Ga.) and Francis Marion (S.C.).

Mount Olive opens CVAC play Tuesday as the Trojans head to Misenheimer, N.C., for a rare mid-week three-game conference series against defending CVAC champion Pfeiffer. The two teams play a single game Tuesday at 2:30 p.m., then play a doubleheader Wednesday beginning at 1 p.m.
