Trojan netters cruise

Mount Olive won all six singles matches as the Trojans opened their 2006 season with an 8-1 victory over Fayetteville State in non-conference NCAA II women's tennis Friday at Walker Tennis Center.

Lucia Henkle, last year's Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Year, won 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for the Trojans. Jen Mosier's straight-set win at No. 4 singles clinched the overall win for Mount Olive. Mariana Shimoda and Lauren Harris followed with wins at Nos. 2 and 5 singles respectively.

Freshman Carol Salgado de Aro lost only two games at No. 3 singles in her collegiate debut, while sophomore Emily Escolas, also making her collegiate tennis debut, won a second-set tie-breaker at No. 6 singles.

Mount Olive (1-0) is off until Thursday when the Trojans travel to Greenville, N.C., to face Division I East Carolina. Fayetteville State (0-1) plays host to Methodist Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
