Gators top Rebels in regular-season finale

CALYPSO -- Spring Creek's Josh Wright dropped in a team-high 14 points as the Gators wrapped up the regular season with a 64-61 win at North Duplin on Friday.

Spring Creek (11-13 overall) finished 7-3 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference and is the No. 3 seed for the conference tourney. The Gators will host the No. 6 Rebels (1-15, 1-9) on Tuesday in the first round at 7:30 p.m. Also in Seven Springs, No. 5 Princeton will take on No. 4 Rosewood, another rematch from Friday, at 6 p.m. in the tournament opener.

Daniel Chewning and Cliff Wilson added 12 points each for the Gators, while Desmund Raeford and Dalreese Bell had 10 and nine points, respectively. Raeford added eight rebounds, and Wilson and Maurice Langston had seven boards each.

North Duplin's Montreal Garner led all scorers with 19 points as Chris Graham (12 points), Doug Lloyd (11 points) and Ryan Killette (10 points) also reached double figures.

No. 5 WCDS falls

at No. 2 Greenfield

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's Tavon Waters finished with 19 points and dished out eight assists in the Chargers' 66-43 loss at Greenfield School on Friday.

The Knights (25-6 overall), ranked No. 2 in the latest N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A poll, concluded the regular season at a perfect, 10-0 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference. The fifth-ranked Chargers (18-9 overall) wrapped up league play at 7-3 with two of those losses coming against Greenfield.

The Knights and Chargers received a first-round bye for the CPIC Tournament and will both return to action on Friday in the semifinals at WCDS, which will host the girls and boys semifinals and Saturday's championships. The Chargers take on the winner of No. 6 Halifax and No. 3 Rocky Mount Academy at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.

Adam Wright added 15 points and nine rebounds for the Chargers, while Shadoe Stewart chipped in eight points and six rebounds. Cameron Strickland notched 7 rebounds to go with three points and three steals.

Greenfield's Donovan Jones led all scorers with 23 points.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's Lauren Blackmore dropped in a game-high 26 points to help lead the Rebels past Spring Creek, 55-49 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference finale for both teams.

North Duplin (7-9 overall) improved to 3-7 in league play, while the Lady Gators (5-18 overall) slipped to 4-6. No. 4 Spring Creek and the fifth-seed Rebels (7-9, 3-7) will face off again on Monday at 6 p.m. at Princeton in the first round of the league tourney, before the No. 3 Lady Bulldogs and No. 6 Ayden-Grifton battle at 7:30 p.m.

Brittani Billups pumped in a game-best 17 points for Spring Creek, while Sarah Parks chipped in 10 points and Barbara Witherington notched eight points.

Sierra Ward added 12 points for the Lady Rebels, who erased an early 10-2 deficit in the first quarter.

CPIC title

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's Kevin Martell had a team-best 20 points in the Chargers' 56-52 win over Greenfield School in the regular-season finale for both teams on Friday.

WCDS (16-5 overall) finished 11-1 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference and won the league championship. The Chargers will carry the top seed into the conference tourney, beginning Thursday at home.

Kameron Byrd added 16 points for WCDS, while David Wilson contributed 13 points.

GHS suffers

home loss

Goldsboro's Jameson Wellington scored 15 points and pulled down five rebounds as the Cougars fell, 76-65 at home against North Pitt on Friday.

Goldsboro (11-9 overall) concluded the season at 5-5 in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference play. North Pitt emerged as the conference champion.

Kevonta McDuffie added 12 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars, while Tavon Murchison chipped in 12 points and four assists and Jamal Rouse had eight points and five steals.

Middle schools

WCDS boys 42, Greenfield 35 -- In their season finale, Brandon Davis led the Chargers with 12 points, while Kobi Hood dropped in nine points. Tanner Pate and Cameron Ford added eight points each for WCDS (13-5 overall), which won the conference title after an 8-2 campaign.
