Mount Olive women look to snap 5-game skid

Tomorrow, Mount Olive College will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sport Day. The Trojan women's basketball team hopes the festivities include a much-needed win.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans play host to Queens in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's basketball. Tipoff is 2 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.

Free admission will be offered to high school, middle school and elementary school girls wearing their team uniforms or other team apparel.

Mount Olive (10-11 overall, 5-9 CVAC) is coming off a hard-fought 75-68 loss Monday at home against regionally fifth-ranked Barton. The Trojans rallied from double-digit deficits in both halfs, but could never gain the lead down the stretch.

Two Trojans recorded double-doubles in Monday's contest as Teneal Boone scored 15 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for her 10th double-double of the season. Keona Corley's late basket clinched her first collegiate double-double with 10 points and 10 assists. Corley has reached double figures in assists three times this season.

Mount Olive is seeking its first win in nearly three weeks as the Trojans try to end a five-game losing skid. In three of the losses, the Trojans were within five points or less in the final three minutes of the game.

Queens (3-18, 2-12) fell 98-79 Monday at home against regionally fourth-ranked Anderson. Phyllicia Turner led Queens with 31 points.

Mount Olive won the first meeting between the two teams 78-70 at Charlotte. Boone tallied 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Ebony Green added 15 points as the Trojans rallied from an eight-point deficit. Corley dished out 10 assists.

The Trojans enter Saturday's game in a tie for eighth in the CVAC standings, but are only three games out of third place and 21/2 games out of fourth place. Only two games separate the third through seventh-place teams.

NOTES: In the first meeting against Queens, Mount Olive freshmen Tomeka Prichard and Meaghan Vanderhorst both recorded their first collegiate double-figure game with 13 points apiece.
